Congratulations to Louisville Olmsted Parks Conservancy, Inc. in Louisville for receiving
National Trust for Historic Preservation grant funding for Chickasaw Park.

In 1923 the Olmsted Brothers were hired to design Chickasaw Park for the nearby neighborhoods. It is believed that Chickasaw Park was the only municipal park designed by the entire Olmsted firm, from 1883 to 1979, to serve African Americans during the time of segregation.

Until Louisville Parks were desegregated in 1955, Chickasaw Park was the only park to offer recreational space and park amenities to the Black community in the area.

The Olmsted Park system was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, a program of the National Trust, is thrilled to announce $3 million in funding to protect 30 sites of African American history across the country. These grants will advance ongoing preservation activities at historic homes, schools, museums, and landscapes that represent African American cultural heritage.

Amongst this year’s grantees are sites honoring the pivotal contributions of African American women, architects, athletes, and educators who broke barriers and helped build their communities.

This year’s list also includes the second iteration of Conserving Black Modernism grants designed to protect and raise awareness around the work of African American architects. These sites will receive $1.2 million in preservation funding through the Action Fund with the generous support and partnership of the Getty Foundation.

We are grateful to the Mellon Foundation, Ford Foundation, Getty Foundation and the Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation for making this work possible.

The Kentucky portion of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail includes sites such as Big Bone Lick State Historic Site and Locust Grove - Historic Locust Grove, Inc.. Check out the National Park Service website to plan your visit! https://www.nps.gov/lecl/planyourvisit/kentucky.htm

If you’ve ever received a Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail brochure (also known as a “unigrid”), you know it’s one of the largest in the National Park Service. On 24 panels, the brochure provides a timeline and summary of the Lewis and Clark story on one side with a full map of the trail, from Pittsburgh to the Pacific Ocean, on the other. There are more than 25 images and drawings that support the narrative.

Recently, an audio-described version of our brochure was produced to aid those visitors who are blind or visually impaired, which not only provides audio of the text, but also includes descriptions of the images.

The project began in the fall of 2022 when a Lewis and Clark Trail staff member and volunteer participated on a team in the UniDescription Project, led by Dr. Brett Oppegaard, a Professor at University of Hawaii in the School of Communication and Information, who has been collaborating with colleagues in the UH Center on Disability Studies and the National Park Service to create more audio-described material. The team of six learned the art of description, practiced it with challenges that pitted them against other teams in single elimination tournaments, and gave them an opportunity to focus their new skills on the Lewis and Clark Trail brochure.

The result of their work is currently available at https://ow.ly/mIhL50SAjMt.

It will also be available soon on our webpage: https://ow.ly/M54N50SAjMw.

In addition to this audio-described brochure, the Trail’s interpretive staff has prepared Braille-printed booklets of the brochure, tactile maps of the entire Trail route, and a tactile exhibit booklet featuring animals of the Lewis and Clark Trail. Many of our partner visitor centers provide these materials to their guests.

Congratulations to Simmons College of Kentucky for receiving a grant from the Heritage & Historic Preservation - NPS Historic Preservation Fund’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant program, which focuses on the repair of historic structures on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

As mentioned in the National Park Service press release, the college will rehabilitate Steward Hall, one of two remaining buildings built during the college’s peak period in 1924. The architect and builder Samuel Plato is a celebrated Black architect who also graduated from Simmons College. The grant funds will be used to rehabilitate windows and doors as well as provide foundation repairs and tuckpointing.

Did you know Kentucky was the first state in the country to develop a statewide LGBTQ+ Historic Context? A project by University of Louisville Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research, Fairness Campaign, Kentucky Heritage Council - SHPO, and other dedicated volunteers, utilizing a National Park Service Underrepresented Community Grant Program, which works to diversify nominations submitted to the National Register of Historic Places, funded the effort to recognize the significance of this property related to LGBTQ history in Louisville.

On Saturday, June 22 at 1:00 p.m. CDT Mammoth Cave National Park & Camp Nelson National Monument will host a special event to commemorate and the 160th anniversary of Camp Nelson.

in 1864, the War Department issued General Orders No. 20 which authorized the unrestricted enlistment of African American men in the US Army and established 8 recruiting and training centers in Kentucky including Camp Nelson.

Will Garvin, an enslaved man from Hart County, Kentucky, was one of thousands of African American freedom seekers who self-emancipated by enlisting with the 12th US Colored Heavy Artillery (USCHA) regiment organized at Camp Nelson. Garvin later settled in Edmonson County, Kentucky after the Civil War and worked as a cave guide and explorer in Mammoth Cave. His famous discovery during his time at the cave was the maze-like passage known as “The Corkscrew” which opened a variety of cave tour routes for visitors in the late 1800s.

On Saturday, June 22 at 1:00 p.m. CDT Mammoth Cave National Park & Camp Nelson National Monument will host a special event to commemorate and the 160th anniversary of Camp Nelson. Join us at the outdoor amphitheater in Mammoth Cave National Park for the presentation of a special US flag to members of the 12th USCHA (Reactivated) along with a ceremony to pay tribute to African American soldiers, civilians, and refugees who pursued freedom, equality, and the rights of citizenship.

On today's date in 1777, the United States approved the design for its first national flag.

The American flag continued to evolve, and the Act of April 4, 1818 provided for 13 stripes and one star for each state, to be added to the flag on the 4th of July following the admission of each new state.

Although Kentucky was admitted to the United States as its 15th state on June 1, 1792, the star representing Kentucky was not added until 1795.

Three Kentucky Main Street Communities - London, Middlesboro and Campbellsville - have each been selected as one of 30 communities nationwide, including Puerto Rico, to participate in Main Street America's Equitable Entrepreneurial Ecosystems in Rural Communities Pilot Program, supported by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, in partnership with Forward Cities.

This program aims to engage, activate, and empower entrepreneurial talent in rural communities so that everyone sees themselves reflected on their Main Street. Participants will identify barriers preventing entrepreneurs from starting or growing local businesses and develop action items to address them.

Along with joining a cohort of national thought leaders and partners, communities will receive a $5,000 seed grant and $1,500 toward professional development certification with the International Economic Development Council. There is also an opportunity for communities to receive additional funding as the program expands.

Congratulations!
