Katie and Zach from our Site Development Program recently completed an easement inspection at the Marshall Key House. Built in 1807, this building now houses the Harriet Beecher Stowe Slavery to Freedom Museum. According to 1800s newspaper accounts, Harriet Beecher Stowe's (1811-1896) visit to a slave auction near Maysville was in part responsible for inspiring her to write Uncle Tom's Cabin.
The house was built by Marshall Key, nephew of U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Marshall and the 3rd County Clerk of Mason Co. The museum has been undergoing renovations and has educational exhibits about slavery, Harriet Beecher Stowe.
The Slavery to Freedom Museum is open to the public daily 10am-4pm.

How many easements are held on steamboats? We're not sure, but we only hold one, and it might be one of the most unique easements we inspect. Thanks to the whole team at the Belle of Louisville Riverboats for your hospitality and for sharing so much of the rich history of The Belle with us. It's clear how much love, determination, and effort goes into caring for this historic riverboat.
