Students at Marion County High School combined history, math and physics lessons to work on restoring Ray Cemetery in their community! Through their studies of history, students are able to uncover the stories behind these tombstones and the people buried there. Students also applied their math skills to the project, using measurements and calculations to ensure they were digging in the right locations and not damaging any of the tombstones in the process.

The learning experiences that students gain from this project are truly remarkable, helping students combine different subjects.

The MCHS Young Historian’s Club traveled to the Ray Cemetery in Loretto to do some research & find tombstones. They ended up finding the oldest known burial in Marion County as well as numerous head & foot stones (which were all cleaned). A great experience for this group!
