Today, we surprised Harvey Franklin, an agriculture teacher at Lincoln County High School, with the Golden Owl Award for the Lake Cumberland Region!

Here’s a quote from one of his nominations!

“Anytime when scheduling a practice for speeches, parliamentary procedure, land judging, quiz bowl, etc. Mr. Franklin's motto has always been, "You tell me a time, and I will be here." This stood out to me as a freshman because Mr. Franklin was so selfless. He is ready and waiting to help and practice whenever you are able. Every time I drive by the high school, his car is there, and he is working for the betterment of our chapter. Mr. Franklin is a selfless, humble, and hardworking advisor who is always putting his students in the spotlight. This hard work has led to great success for him throughout the years, including four parliamentary procedure state wins, several state officers, numerous state speaking awards, etc. Mr. Franklin never takes credit for these awards even though he prepared students for their success, and is always sure to highlight student accomplishments to his classroom and the surrounding community.”

Kentucky’s first year participating in the Golden Owl Award is sponsored by Nationwide Insurance. There were over 322 Golden Owl Award nominations. Each finalist will receive a $500 check. Next, they can enter the selection stage for the chance to be crowned as Kentucky’s Ag Educator of the Year, earning an additional $3,000 Nationwide-funded check and the coveted Golden Owl Award trophy.

Congratulations, Mr. Franklin!

Earlier today, we surprised Mrs. Mackenzie Thomas, teacher of agriculture at Marion County with the Golden Owl Award for the Lincoln Trail Region.

Here are a few quotes from her nominations.

"By the end of my eighth-grade year my interest in FFA had definitely increased! If it hadn't been for Mrs. Thomas, I don't think I would be anywhere close to where I am now with my agriculture knowledge and my leadership skills. After the end of my eighth-grade year Mrs. Thomas was always pushing me to do something new, starting with going to FFA camp, an experience I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. "

"At the end of the day, Makenzie is dedicated to making each and every student a better person by the time they graduate than when they came to her. She makes teaching agriculture look easy; it just comes naturally to her. I cannot think of a more deserving recipient!"

🌾📚 Celebrating Kentucky Ag Education Week! 📚🌾

This past week, Kentucky Ag Education Week (March 17-21, 2025) gave students across the state the chance to explore the impact of agriculture in their daily lives. With the help of lesson plans, hands-on activities, and real-world connections, educators helped broaden students' understanding of where their food, fiber, and fuel come from.

A dedicated team has been working since July to plan this special week! They kicked things off Monday with visits to Creekside Elementary and Old Kentucky Home Middle School, sharing the message of Ag Education Week and learning more about their agriculture programs.

Thank you to everyone who made this week possible! 💙💛

Earlier today, we surprised Dr. Wesley Estes, teacher of agriculture at Logan County with the Golden Owl Award for the Barren River Region.

Here are a few quotes from his nominations.

"Mr. Estes pushes me and all of his students to do their best each and every day! He takes his job very seriously but also makes it the funniest class we're in and we also learn the most. Mr. Estes loves his job and all the kids. He sets up great activities/community service opportunities for us in the town. I have never seen a teacher be more committed to helping students and to helping them succeed than him. Every year at the to***co festival he sets up the trailer and grill, and we help sell and cook pork chop and ribeye sandwiches for the community and they love it every year. It wouldn't be possible without Mr. Estes!"

Congratulations, Dr. Estes!

He takes the time to know each student personally, greeting us with a high-five in the hall, always with a genuine smile that brightens our day. His warmth and approachability create an environment where we feel supported and valued. It's no wonder he was voted Teacher of the Year for the 2023-2024 school year; he truly deserves it."
