Kentucky Virtual Library

Kentucky Virtual Library KYVL is a statewide and cost-effective tool for connecting Kentuckians with learning and research.

Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL) functions like a consortium of Kentucky libraries. KYVL primarily negotiates contracts for digital resources and administers services, such as the ground courier service to public libraries, public colleges & universities, to provide equitable access to quality library and information resources for all Kentuckians through its members, which includes most of the publ

ic P-20 organizations in Kentucky. KYVL was created with the passage of the Kentucky Postsecondary Education Improvement Act of 1997 and went online in 1999. Kentucky Virtual Library is unit of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education.

NEW PASSWORDS JULY 1 --

Our new passwords will be in place July 1. After July 1, you can request the password via our online form if your email address is a unique email domain in our system – KYVL.org/pw. [It's under the padlock button in the upper right of KYVL.org.]

If you have a public school email address, we have that. If you have an email with your library name or abbreviation, we have that.

Those in public libraries that use Gmail, iCloud, or similar email addresses that are widely available, we can't validate them in our system. Library staff will need to email us at [email protected].

Single sign-on (SAML login) for K12

We now have about 100 public school districts -- over 450,000 students! -- set up to log in using school email accounts. And a few private schools. We can make accommodations for private schools or other organizations with email domains limited to Kentucky users if Google or Microsoft manage the accounts.

If you have interest in this, get in touch. Or share these links to your network/DTC folks.

Congratulations Commissioner Lyons! Welcome to Kentucky.

We are excited to announce that Denise Lyons has been appointed as our new commissioner!

Commissioner Lyons has 30 years of professional experience in education, in addition to working with nonprofit organizations and libraries. She is currently conducting original research on emergency preparedness and the value of libraries to communities during disasters.

“I am thrilled to accept this new challenge in Kentucky and I look forward to working with the dynamic group of professionals at KDLA,” Commissioner Lyons said. “Not only is what we do for the commonwealth important, I consider this opportunity to serve as a privilege to do what I love while working with others who are also committed to serving with excellence.”

Commissioner Lyons holds a certificate in executive management from the University of Washington; a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of South Carolina; a master’s degree in public services management from DePaul University and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Boston University.

Please join us in welcoming Commissioner Lyons!

Announcing new character appeal: Neurodivergent | NoveList

NoveList has a new character appeal term - neurodivergent.

"In our goal to promote diversity and increase ease of searching, we wanted to make sure to make a separate character appeal, outside of ability diverse, that focused on people who are neurodivergent. In NoveList, the character appeal neurodivergent is applied to works with characters that are neurodivergent, which means their brains and cognitive functions differ from neurotypical people (those who are not neurodivergent) in one or more ways. Neurodivergent includes a wide range of diagnoses, such as autism, ADHD, OCD, and sensory disorders."

Read this blog post on how to use the "neurodivergent" term in your searches.

Announcing updated Character Identity tags | NoveList

NoveList is expanding character tags. Take a look.

"Here at NoveList, we are in the process of updating our diversity appeal terminology, supplementing the current broad and somewhat vague terms (i.e., culturally diverse, religiously diverse, ability diverse, and LGBTQIA diverse) with more specific and meaningful access points. In recent conversations, the overwhelming feedback we’ve gotten about these terms is the importance of specificity. Readers want to find books with characters that represent their identity or a particular perspective that they may want to explore.

Motivated by what we heard from both our staff and customers, we resolved to do better. We’ve always had a variety of very specific subject headings in NoveList, so our goal in replacing the overly broad terms has been to streamline our more specific identity-related headings. This work will make it so that users can easily find them and more reliably bring in books featuring historically marginalized characters."

An easier way to find underrepresented characters.

Greetings!

As folks are coming back and getting in the mindset for school to start, be thinking about single sign-on to too.

We do usually issue passwords in July but we are pushing hard to get our member school districts to set up single sign-on. Once it is set up, students and everyone in the district will use their school email and password to sign into KYVL.org when away from the school network.

Please pass on this information to your CIO or DTC. Takes about 5 minutes on each end. We currently have about 30 districts set up. It goes pretty smoothly. We can do Google and Microsoft SSO.

Share this short guide with your DTC on how to pull the metadata we need to set up . https://kyvl.libwizard.com/f/sso

We also offer free training. I could come down on a district PD day and do 3 sessions for elementary, middle and high teachers. We can also set up online training.

One of the great things about is that all the content can be linked to and the links put wherever they are needed for students, faculty, etc. We have content for professional interests as well as students.
