Can EPPs take anything from common class-wide reading selections for this year's college freshmen?
Social justice. Climate change. Racial inequality. Immigration. Hunger. While those topics might read like a laundry list of some of the world’s biggest problems, they are just a few of the issues covered in books that are required reading for freshmen at colleges across the country.
Chris Barbic's reflection on stepping down from his position in Tennessee's Achievement School District provides food for thought on school leadership, the importance of committed and talented educators, the impact of political and social contexts, and the toll exacted by implementing change in the real world of neghborhood schools.
Editor’s note: Chris Barbic announced today his decision to step down as the head of Tennessee’s Achievement School District, a position he has held since 2011. Under his leadership, the Achievement School District has shown great promise, as described in two Fordham Institute reports by Nelson Smit…
Some Kentucky EPPs are using information available from ACT to identify and recruit prospective candidates--just like college coaches identify and recruit prospective athletes. For EPPs interested in strategic identification and recruiment, this conference would be a great place to get started!

BY LINDA B. BLACKFORD

Town hall meetings are scheduled in Pikeville, Frankfort, Somerset, Murray and Highland Heights beginning Wednesday.

The public meetings will be held from 6-8 p.m. at these locations:
■ Wednesday, July 15: University of Pikeville, Community Technology Center, Room 125, Pikeville.
■ Thursday, July 16: Student Center Ballroom, 4th floor, Kentucky State University, Frankfort.
■ Monday, July 20: Harold Rogers Student Commons, Community Room, Somerset Community College, Somerset.
■ Tuesday, July 21: Collins Industry and Technology Center, Freed Curd Auditorium, Murray State University, Murray.

Important information for faculty and candidates alike: "Teachers who continue to believe that 'your basic intelligence can't change' – despite evidence to the contrary – may rob students of opportunities to learn and grow. Computer science and math instructors who endorse such beliefs, for instance, report being more likely to advise struggling undergraduates to drop their classes."

Sure, STEM can be hard, but telling kids "not everyone can do it" may make both boys and girls less inclined to try.
These figures are staggering and are certainly related to increased scrutiny being applied to higher education.
Just 20 universities received one-fifth of the total amount of loans the government gave graduate students in the 2013-2014 academic year.

What factors are we considering when making student teaching placements? "What's one way to get more teachers interested in working in low-income schools? A new paper suggests one possibility: Give them opportunities to do their student-teaching in such schools."

High-quality teacher candidates seem more likely to take jobs in low-performing districts if they do their student teaching there, a study finds.
Along with other important information, this week's CAEP Weekly Update includes a reminder about the schedule for application of the Standards for Advanced Programs: "In order to give EPPs enough time to prepare for submission of their advanced programs for review, CAEP is extending the timeline by one year. Any EPP submitting a self-study before fall 2017, using the CAEP Initial Standards, will not include evidence for Advanced level programs." Read more in the Update.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to all you teachers out there!
It's Teacher Appreciation Week! Take the time to celebrate and all weeklong :)

One of those myths we need to debunk!
"What used to be a catch-all statistic based on the work of University of Pennsylvania Professor Richard Ingersoll—that half of all teachers leave within the first five years of entering the profession—has shown to be unreliable, even according to Ingersoll himself."
Only 17 percent of teachers tracked in a federal longitudinal study left the profession, far fewer than the often-cited 50 percent.
The Education Professional Standards Board will hold a special meeting on Monday, May 4, at 9:00 a.m. Eastern. There is a very short agenda. As outlined at the last board meeting, the proposed CAEP timeline (Item C below) would result in a state partnership agreement with CAEP in December 2015 after input from a partnership task force with broad EPP representation.
