Wed 11 AM update - There is still a risk of strong to severe storms tonight, mainly from 7 PM to 3 AM CDT. Damaging winds are the primary hazard, but flooding is also possible, and we can't rule out a tornado or two in south central Kentucky.

UPDATE: The westbound lane on the lower deck of the Sherman Minton Bridge has also reopened.
--
The Sherman Minton Renewal project has reopened the lower deck of the I-64 Sherman Minton Bridge in eastbound direction with westbound to follow after midnight.
Crews completed necessary repairs and final inspections on the westbound Kentucky approach bearing Sunday evening. Round the clock operations, a fluid inspection process and better than expected weekend weather were factors in safely reopening the bridge to two-way traffic.

An update about the emergency repair of the Sherman Minton bridge:
The reopening of the Sherman Minton Bridge won’t come before rush hour Monday morning due to added safety measures and weather delays.
Repair teams on the project will spend the weekend installing stabilizers and redundant bracing as they repair a loose bearing that led to the closure of the crossing. For enhanced safety, a digital monitoring system will be installed to provide continuous, real-time data on the structure throughout the remainder of the Sherman Minton Renewal Project.

Yesterday, Governor Andy Beshearjoined local officials to ceremonially break ground on the expansion of a portion of the Edward T. Breathitt Pennyrile Parkway. The project will make improvements necessary to bring the 34-mile section up to interstate highway standards. Upon completion, which is expected in November 2024, the Federal Highway Administration could then add the roadway to the Interstate Highway System as I-169.

Move over when you see flashing lights on roadsides. If changing lanes is impossible or unsafe, slow down and use caution. Keep yourself and those on the job safe.
*MOVE OVER*
In 2003, KSP Trooper Bryan Judd was struck by a vehicle that failed to move over on I-75. He was responding to as collision, and as Trooper Judd opened his door to exit his cruiser, he was struck by another vehicle and thrown into the cruiser.
Trooper Judd had several injuries that resulted in multiple surgeries on his spine that could have left him paralyzed. After more than three years of recovery, Judd returned to work with KSP and has made it his mission to enforce the Move Over campaign and pleads with drivers to drive with caution.
“Thankfully, I was able to see my family again after the accident, but the next person may not be as lucky,” said Trooper Judd. “Please move over and slow down for any law enforcement and emergency vehicle on the side of the road.”
Kentucky has a Move Over law requiring motorists to move over to the adjacent lane when approaching an emergency vehicle or public safety vehicle with flashing lights (KRS 189.930). If changing lanes is impossible or unsafe, motorists must slow down and use caution.

Last week, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced that Walsh Kokosing has been awarded the design-build contract for the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project. This major milestone brings us one step closer to the construction of this historic project!
Check out these great tips for staying safe on the road around large trucks! Drive save, Kentucky!
Operation SafeDRIVE stands for Distracted Reckless Impaired Visibility Enforcement. This enforcement campaign targets unsafe driving behavior that often leads to crashes involving passenger cars and commercial vehicles. KSP encourages all motorists to take the following advice while driving on the roads:
👉Stay out of blind spots: Large trucks and buses have big blind spots on all four sides.
👉Pass safely: Make sure you can see the truck driver in their side mirror. Use your turn signals and don’t linger in the blind spot. Make sure you can see the CMV vehicle in your rearview mirror before you pull in front.
👉Don’t cut off large vehicles: It takes a large truck traveling at highway speeds the length of two football fields to stop.
👉Don’t tailgate: Tailgating a commercial vehicle puts you in a blind spot.

KYTC crews have spent the past two months working hard to clear debris left behind from the devastating flooding in Eastern Kentucky. Included in the cleanup is the retrieval of damaged vehicles, which are relocated to Vehicle Management Sites where their owners can reclaim them. Nearly 40 vehicles have been relocated and more than 360,000 tons of debris have been removed from waterways and roadways. These efforts help remove safety hazards, minimize potential flooding in streams during rain events, and restore communities to their pre-flood conditions. As roadside debris collection wraps up, please remember to move eligible, unbagged debris to the right of way by November 1. Repairing bridges and building diversions (temporary crossings) has been a top priority for KYTC since the catastrophic flooding in Eastern Kentucky. Bridges are connectors, and in areas like Eastern Kentucky where a bridge is often the only way in and out for a community, they are essential. To date, KYTC has inspected more than 1,000 bridges and identified 100 in need of repair or replacement. Crews have also built over 50 diversions, establishing temporary access until permanent bridges can be built. #TeamKentucky #KYTCExtraMile Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 10 Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 12 Governor Andy Beshear Kentucky Emergency Management

Every three hours, a person or vehicle is hit by a train. These tragic and fatal incidents are preventable. Rail Safety Week is held to raise awareness of railroad-related deaths and injuries that continue to destroy our communities and steal the lives of friends and loved ones. Grade Crossing Safety Tips: • Never drive or walk around lowered grade crossing gates. • Never attempt to outrun an approaching train. It can take a train a mile or more to stop. • Never stop your vehicle on a grade crossing waiting for traffic to move. • Always know that the average train is three feet wider than the track on each side. • Never walk, run, play or take pictures on the railroad right-of-way. If you are on or near the tracks, you are trespassing on private property and breaking the law. • If you’re standing on the train tracks, you may not hear or feel an oncoming train. www.stayoffthetracks.org

Child Passenger Safety Week In 2018, of the 634 fatalities that occurred in children 12 and under in cars, pickups, vans, and SUVs, 33% of children were unbuckled. As a parent or caregiver, you can’t prevent every scraped knee or tummy bug, but you can significantly lower your child’s chance of getting injured or killed in a car crash by ensuring they are in the right car seat. It’s important, no matter their age, that all children are in the correct car seats for their ages and sizes, and are buckled up in the back seat. #TheRightSeat
KYTC is working to quickly restore access where bridges were damaged or destroyed by flooding in Eastern Kentucky. Crews are in the field assessing needs and building new crossings. Already, more than two dozen temporary crossings have been built at bridge sites where access had been cut off, and construction has begun to build permanent bridge replacements at several other sites. By the end of the summer, KYTC expects to have permanent replacements completed on all state and county bridges where access was cut off. #TeamKentucky #KYTCExtraMile
