As Labor Day quickly approaches, Kentuckians are reminded to celebrate the end of summer safely by planning for a sober, designated driver if festivities include alcohol.

While law enforcement officers patrol for impaired drivers year-round, impaired driving crashes typically increase over holidays, so the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Office of Highway Safety is joining NHTSA and law enforcement across the nation in reminding drivers to “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” during the campaign Aug. 18 - Sept. 4.

Last year during the Labor Day holiday weekend, there were 76 crashes involving an impaired driver, resulting in 44 injuries and one death.

Check out the Rollover Simulator at the Kentucky State Police booth located in the south wing of the Kentucky Exposition Center.

The simulator uses life–size dummies to demonstrate what may happen to motor vehicle occupants in a rollover crash, both buckled and unbuckled. Unbuckled, the dummies are ejected from the simulator as it rolls. Buckled, the dummies remain safely restrained.

Please and for emergency responders!

Kentucky passed a Move Over law in 2003 requiring motorists to move over to the adjacent lane when approaching an emergency vehicle or public safety vehicle with flashing lights (KRS 189.930). If changing lanes is impossible or unsafe, motorists must slow down and use caution. Failure to do so can result in fines, jail time or both.

If you see flashing lights on the side of the road, slow down and move over. It’s not just a courtesy to emergency personnel—it’s the law.

Please slow down and for emergency vehicles.

Please slow down and for emergency vehicles.

*MOVE OVER*
In 2003, KSP Trooper Bryan Judd was struck by a vehicle that failed to move over on I-75. He was responding to as collision, and as Trooper Judd opened his door to exit his cruiser, he was struck by another vehicle and thrown into the cruiser.

Trooper Judd had several injuries that resulted in multiple surgeries on his spine that could have left him paralyzed. After more than three years of recovery, Judd returned to work with KSP and has made it his mission to enforce the Move Over campaign and pleads with drivers to drive with caution.

“Thankfully, I was able to see my family again after the accident, but the next person may not be as lucky,” said Trooper Judd. “Please move over and slow down for any law enforcement and emergency vehicle on the side of the road.”

Kentucky has a Move Over law requiring motorists to move over to the adjacent lane when approaching an emergency vehicle or public safety vehicle with flashing lights (KRS 189.930). If changing lanes is impossible or unsafe, motorists must slow down and use caution.

Please slow down and pay attention in work zones.

Construction season is in full swing, which means you may encounter orange barrels on Kentucky roadways. Here are some tips to help navigate work zones safely:

- Plan your route before you go. Check goky.ky.gov or the app for up-to-date traffic and construction information.
- Slow down when in a work zone. Look for reduced speed limit signs.
- Avoid distractions. Focus on the zone, not your phone.
- Always buckle up.

Safe driving means that everyone on the road, behind the wheel or a barrel, gets home safely.

Approximately 25% of crashes in Kentucky involve a speeding or aggressive driver, so we're partnering with law enforcement agencies across the state on the ‘Not So Fast, Kentucky’ speed awareness campaign through July 31.

Speed limits are the law and enforceable if not obeyed. Driving over the limit greatly reduces a driver’s ability to respond to unexpected situations, such as stopped or slowed traffic, an object in the road, or encountering vulnerable road users such as highway workers, pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.

The best at keeping the public informed on highway conditions! 👍
ANY HEAVY CONSRUCTION BETWEEN KNOXVILLE AND LEXINGTON, KY
Louisville/Prospect US42 needs reflectors!!! It’s very difficult driving at night, especially while raining, unable to see lines on the road. Someone is going to get hurt.
How many months does it take to fix this? Surely your vehicles have gone by this a bazillion times.

I-65 Southbound about mile marker 113
Well once again I 65 has managed to take over the plans of hundreds of ppl on a Sunday afternoon. Every time it rains and an accident happens you can bet traffic is at a stand still. A simple trip to see an ill friend that may not be around very long is taken away. I wonder how many memories have been stolen by this mess. Lost lives accidents ? Sitting on I 65 in traffic is dangerous in itself.. If you became ill or had a small child this would be a problem. I have heard of ppl sitting for at least 4 hours just last week. Two elderly ladies... This is beyond acceptable. Their should be a law against this.. What if you needed help.?.. they could not reach you most of the time. Blocked by concrete on both sides.. this is dangerous. How many more years are we going to have to put up with this?
Congratulations to Ben
