This centennial celebration has been playing in my mind since the summer of 2004, when we moved home to revive the farmhouse. Each year as Dale and I worked on the home and farm, we knew that the 100th year would be a defining moment for our family. It was so hard. You could barely make it to the house for all the saplings and junk. My grandmother Emma left it to us on the condition that we live here in it and in doing so, we sacrificed a lot. We have kept our promise to her and Mom, Rebecca and Kay...that we would indeed fix it up and make it what it used to be for them.
Mom, Rebecca and Kay told such loving stories of times here and really everyone had wonderful memories. We wanted to make a place for folks to come home to once again. Grandma and Granddaddy would be happy, I think, that we kept as many of their things as we could.
When you visit, you will see that nothing is perfect and not everything is complete. When I think of the hard work it took to build and buy the supplies to upgrade things, I wanted to hold on to them as long as they could hold on to us. Many things have been augmented to provide a different function altogether. Like our headboard is the short door that we took out to close off the laundry room. When you walk on the porch, it is on some of the same boards that were originally laid, and were cut from historic oak trees that once provided shade to this valley.
Many things we have had to lovingly let go of, like the to***co barn, the corn crib, chicken coop and the smoke house. I make signs to remind the little ones of what was once here. We re-used the wood for the fireplaces and other sentimental custom work.
We have worked to clear the land so you can see what it really is....and finally, after many blessings, the land and home are cooperating. Its been18 years, of doing almost all the work ourselves, just as my ancestors did. We have arrived at the destination that has always been the long goal....this 100 year celebration. Thank you so much for joining this almost solemn event.
Thank you so much for the help with the roof and closing off the back porch Jeff Baker and Adam West. Thank you mostly, mom Marcia Myers Pyatt for believing in us and helping when we just couldn't go on. Marcia Myers Pyatt, Rebecca Chastain, Kay Myers Williams, Ashley Hatch, Darren Chastain and Emanuel Williams.... May God bless our family richly and keep us safe and healthy and prosperous. I do believe our ancestors will be with us and cheering us on for getting things back to goodness!
