A couple of years ago, when he was still a teenager in high school, Caleb spent his summers doing odd jobs around our house to earn some extra cash. Mowing grass, clearing brush, whatever needed to be done, he never turned anything down. It was gas money, spending money, and a way to keep moving while he finished school.
As graduation got closer, Caleb started talking more and more about law enforcement. He was curious, motivated, and asking the right questions. That’s when we talked about bringing him on at PSS to help upfit vehicles…the same vehicles law enforcement agencies across North Carolina rely on every day to do their jobs.
What stood out to me was his willingness to work hard and learn something new, all for the chance to be closer to the profession he felt called to. He wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. He asked questions. He listened. He talked with the officers coming and going from the shop, picked their brains, and soaked up every bit of advice they were willing to give. When he wasn’t working, he was doing ride-alongs, showing up, and saying yes to every opportunity to learn.
We were proud to have him work with us, even if it was only for a short time. After he graduated and officially began his journey into law enforcement, he moved on, but he was never a stranger. He always stopped by, always caught up, always stayed connected.
Today, I had the honor of standing beside him as he took his oath of office and officially join me at the Macon County Sheriff’s Office. Watching that moment unfold was something special.
This is as full circle as it gets.
