What can YOU do to prevent birds from flying indoors and into windows?
Each year, thousands of birds, like this hummingbird, fly into garages and other open structures and are unable to find their way out. This can easily be prevented by keeping doors closed, putting stickers on windows, keeping lights off or dim, or having a screened door.
Fortunately for this little one, Ranger Mabry was quick to the rescue after she flew into the visitor center. After some snacks and rest, she flew off strong!

Happy Wildflower Wednesday! This week's flower is actually one of Tennessee's state wildlfowers, the passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)! This showy purple flower is native to the southeastern US and grows on a vine, making it a great addition to a mailbox or trellis. Passionflower is also a host plant for the Gulf Fritillary butterfly, as well as being an important source of nectar for hummingbirds and other pollinators. Be on the lookout for it next time you visit our nature parks!

Summer hiking in Middle Tennessee is beautiful, but the heat is no joke! Andrew has a few quick tips to keep you safe from heat exhaustion:
Hydrate: Drink water before and during your hike, and pack extra.💧
Dress Light: Wear lightweight, light-colored clothes. 👕
Time It Right: Hike early in the morning or later in the evening. ⏰
Rest: Take frequent breaks in the shade and know your limits. 🌳

Happy Wildflower Wednesday! Today's feature is the beautiful butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa)! This vibrant orange milkweed is a perennial native to the eastern US and grows well in full sun. As it's name suggests, it is a favorite among butterflies for its color and copious nectar production. It is a great addition to gardens as it is a host plant for the endangered Monarch butterfly. Be on the lookout for these beauties next time you visit our nature parks!

Did you know one of the oldest farming methods in North America has deep roots right here in Williamson County?

At Peacock Hill Nature Park, our staff are growing the "Three Sisters" garden, utilizing a sustainable system of corn, beans, and squash first used by the Mississippian peoples. Each plant plays an important role:

Corn provides a structure for the beans to climb.
Beans fix nitrogen to the soil, acting as a natural fertilizer.
Squash grows low along the ground, keeping moisture in and weeds out.

Be sure to check on our garden's progress the next time you visit the park. 🥾
