For 25 years, Ryan Firster has been a member of the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department.
Throughout those years, Ryan has been the kind of firefighter every department hopes to have — quiet, dependable, and always willing to step up when someone needs a hand. He doesn't need to be asked twice. If there is something he can do to help, he does it.
For newer members of the department, Ryan is someone they can look up to and turn to for advice, guidance, or simply a helping hand. He may not be the person looking for attention, but when something needs to be done, Ryan has always been one of the people who quietly steps forward and gets it done.
And that isn't just the kind of person Ryan is at the fire station.
It's the kind of person he is everywhere.
Ryan has always looked out for the people around him. If a neighbor was struggling and he could help, he did. During the winter, he would plow snow and shovel driveways for those who needed a hand. If he saw someone in need, he didn't wait for an invitation to help.
He simply found a way.
Not for recognition. Not because anyone expected it. Simply because someone needed help, and he could help.
That same spirit of service can be seen in Ryan's faith. Ryan is a devoted Christian and an active member of his church. He gives his time there just as freely as he does everywhere else, always willing to lend a hand and help wherever he is needed. His faith and his willingness to serve others are an important part of who he is.
And then there is Ryan's family.
Ryan has been married for 16 years and is a loving husband and father to his two daughters. His family means the world to him. When he wasn't working, helping others, serving his department, or helping at his church, he loved spending time with his wife and girls, making memories together and enjoying time camping as a family.
He has always worked hard to take care of the people he loves and provide the life they deserve.
For 25 years, Ryan has been someone others could count on when life became difficult.
Now, life has become difficult for Ryan.
Ryan is currently battling cancer.
There are still many unknowns about what the road ahead will bring. What we do know is that this fight has changed life for Ryan and his family in ways no family should ever have to experience.
As the sole provider for his family, Ryan has carried the responsibility of making sure his wife and daughters had what they needed. Now, while his focus needs to be on his health and his family, they are also facing the financial challenges that come with everything they are going through.
And that is a burden no family should have to carry alone.
It is difficult to know what to say when someone who has spent so much of his life helping others suddenly finds himself facing something he cannot simply fix with a helping hand.
For the people who know Ryan, his character needs no explanation.
For those who don't, perhaps this story offers a small glimpse of the man behind the uniform — someone who has spent years quietly doing what he could for the people around him, never asking for recognition and never expecting anything in return.
And perhaps that is what makes this moment so difficult.
A man who has always been more comfortable giving than receiving now finds himself in a place none of us ever expect to be.
Whatever the road ahead brings, Ryan won't have to walk it without the love of his family, the people who know him, his faith, and a community that knows the kind of person he has always been.
Some people spend their lives making the world around them a little easier for everyone else.
