We are strong advocates of historic preservation but also strong advocate for building with beauty and maintaining with beauty. Aesthetics matter!

So much of what makes a person appreciate their community is beauty.

We place a considerable amount of value on aesthetics. Humans have a greater sense of attachment to places that are pretty. We seek out charming environments and will pay more to visit them or live in them.

Yet most communities don't have a single organization advocating for good aesthetics. Not one person whose job it is to ask whether what gets built is actually worth caring about.

Which is why most towns never see anything attractive built.

Years ago I was involved with my local preservation organization. It was time to replace the old wooden sign in front of the organization's prized property. We ended up in a heated argument about whether to replace it with a plastic sign. Equal proponents on each side. It left me astonished. I had assumed that preservation minded people were also concerned with quality design.

Preservation matters. It is fundamental to the revitalization of any community. But we cannot overlook how much it matters that the built environment, whether ancient or brand new, is lovable and charming. People derive a sense of attachment from things they find attractive. And a building has a much better chance of growing old if it's pretty.

Whether new or old, beauty is timeless.

This building was home to Deer's Hardware until the early 1980s. The store spanned three floors and stretched all the way from this entrance on South Water Street to East Court Street. The visitor center side used to be the loading dock, and the front door was located on East Court Street. The store sold all kinds of home improvement tools, as well as tractors and farm equipment.
During renovation into the visitor center, Festival Country borrowed from Franklin's rich commercial history and installed a blade sign on the southeast corner of the building in a style that honors the original Deer's Hardware sign. The FDC granted a facade matching grant, which allowed the building to have the sign as well as restoring the front windows with vibrant colors.

The Visitors Center is currently celebrating the history of our country with a Statue of Liberty and American Flag artwork. Stop in and see all the fun things Johnson County offers, while reminding yourself of the history of this beautiful building.

Work continues on 599 Young Street. The interior work saw some walls come down, lots of items removed, and brick work exposed. Outside, the paint is changing on the siding, and the front porch is being lifted and saved. Unfortunately, the rear bedroom that was added on has to be removed and a new room built, but it will be done so seamlessly you won't be able to tell! More to come!

Revitalization is not a finish line, it is a direction. This is our philosophy as well! Never stop working to improve.

Every community I have ever worked with believes it is just about to arrive. One more project. One more development deal. One more ribbon cutting and revitalization will finally be complete.

I have heard this hundreds of times. I am not opposed to optimism. Optimism is essential. But this particular brand of optimism worries me, because it is not how any of this actually works.

You would never say you are one gym visit away from being in shape. You would never tell someone you are one German lesson away from fluency. You understand intuitively that those things are processes, not products. They are trajectories, not destinations.

Cities work exactly the same way.

Revitalization is not a finish line. It is a direction. You are either moving toward health or sliding toward decline, and what determines which way you go is not the once-in-a-decade project. It is the ten thousand smaller decisions happening every day. What city council approves. How staff gets deployed. Whether the nonprofit shows up. Whether the property owner fixes the facade. Whether the shop owner sweeps the entry.

The "almost there" framing is seductive but dangerous because it sets you up for silver bullet thinking. If revitalization is almost complete, then surely one transformational project will push it over the line. It never does. And communities that have been waiting for that final piece of the puzzle have been waiting a long time.

Here is what I would rather you hear: you do not have to do it all at once. In fact, you cannot. Start with the weeds and the trash. Then the paint. Then the street trees. Then one day you look up and people are renovating buildings and nobody can quite remember when things started to change because things started to change everywhere, all at once, slowly and then all at once.

That is the process. That is the magic. It is not the destination. There is no destination.

Stop asking when you will arrive and start asking what you are doing today.

This has always been our goal at the FDC. The work never stops, but oh is it worth it!

The most important thing a community can do to improve its economy, attract tourism, and enhance residents' quality of life is to create an attractive, walkable downtown. A place that makes people feel proud, joyful, and connected. When a downtown achieves this, it becomes a magnet for people, and where people go, businesses and investment always follow.

Successful places don't just look good, they make people feel good. They make us feel sophisticated, dignified, and inspired. Think about the spaces you love visiting. These places aren't just functional, they evoke emotions that keep you coming back. When a community creates a downtown that fosters those feelings, it transforms into a vibrant hub of activity and opportunity.

The best part? Every one of us already knows how to do this. Simply by being human, we understand what places feel good and which ones don't.
