Around 8:28 this morning, crews responded to a fire at a single-story commercial strip building that houses several businesses. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire in the kitchen and rear of El Charo Restaurant, with flames spreading into the attic. Additional mutual aid was requested early on, and crews established a water supply from a nearby hydrant. Firefighters worked through challenging conditions to battle the fire in the rear of the building, the kitchen, and the attic. Thankfully, no civilians were injured. El Charo sustained heavy damage, as did other businesses in the strip. The Macon County Fire Marshal’s Office is working to determine the cause and origin of the fire, with assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Please keep these small businesses in your thoughts as they work through this difficult time. We want to thank all responding fire departments, law enforcement, EMS, Macon County 911, and all agencies assisting with the investigation for their hard work and support.
