Tizo’s new home and the homes of four of her neighbors are nearly complete in Kilifi County, Kenya! In addition to safe housing, her home will have:

🌤️A SOLAR KIT – A solar panel has been installed on Tizo’s new metal roof. For the first time in her life, 89-year-old Tizo will have electricity after sunset. This isn’t just about convenience - it means safer evenings and a way for her grandchildren to read and study after night falls.

🛁LATRINE & SHOWER ROOM – Her new latrine has a special self-closing valve to keep out flies and disease. In addition, a new shower room is being built, so everyone in her family, especially the women and girls, can shower in privacy.

By integrating safe housing with renewable energy and sanitation, we aren't just providing a temporary fix; we are building permanent, community-led infrastructure.

Stay tuned! We are almost to the finish line!

Poverty is rarely caused by just one thing.
And it is never solved by just one solution.

At Shelter Equity, we focus on what actually moves the
needle. Safe housing, access to clean water, and
reliable mobility working together to create a real path
forward. This is what we call the Holistic Triad.

In our latest Impact Journal article, we break down why
a single solution is not enough and how connected
support leads to lasting change across communities
worldwide.

Poverty doesn’t come with a safety net.

For many families, one crisis isn’t just a setback - it’s a complete loss of footing.

Mery’s story in Honduras makes this painfully clear.

She’s a mother and grandmother who has already endured incredible loss. Every day, she works sweeping streets and directing traffic in active work zones—grueling, dangerous labor just to get by.

Her home wasn’t just a structure. It was her stability. Her safety. Her anchor.

Then, one night, a fire took it all.
Everything she had- gone.

Thankfully, no one was hurt. But at nearly 60, living on a street‑sweeper’s wages, Mery faced an impossible reality:

No time to recover
No savings to rely on
No path out of displacement

Until community support made rebuilding possible.

Through a Shelter Equity grant, our local partners are building a new home for Mery, replacing her former timber structure with a concrete‑block home designed to be stronger, safer, and more resilient against fire. The home will include clean water, sanitation, and even a bicycle so she can get to work.

Because loving our neighbors means helping build the foundation they need to move forward after incredible loss.

Families shape everything. They provide support, stability, encouragement, and the foundation people build their lives on. Today, on the International Day of Families, we’re reminded that strong families and strong communities go hand in hand. Safe housing plays a major role in helping both thrive. ❤️

At Shelter Equity, we believe every family deserves a safe place to call home.

The transformation continues in Kilifi County, Kenya!

Tizo’s home is one of five in her village sponsored through Shelter Equity and built by a team of local, skilled laborers. While she can’t physically help with the construction, Tizo spends her days watching her walls go up and caring for the children of neighbors who have stepped in to help.

What’s happening on the ground:

🔨Wattle and Daub Reinforcement: Local artisans are weaving the internal wall structures for all five homes. This traditional technique provides excellent natural insulation, creating a "breathable" environment that stays cool under the intense Kenyan sun.

☔Climate-Smart Protection: Workers are applying a protective finish to the exterior walls. Unlike the old structures, these are designed to repel the dampness and pests that once challenged the health of these families.

📈Economic Resilience: By employing local labor and using durable native materials, every shilling stays within the Kilifi economy, reinforcing the community's own strength.

Every beam placed and every wall sealed is more than a temporary shelter. Thanks to your support, we are investing in safe housing, clean water, and sanitation to ensure this community has a safe, resilient, and healthy living environment for decades to come.

We are in the home stretch for all five families!

Earth Day isn’t just about the planet. It’s about people.

Because where you live shapes everything. Your health, your access to clean water, your ability to move, work, and build a future.

At Shelter Equity, we interrupt poverty through housing, water, and bicycle mobility. These are solutions that don’t just change lives, they reduce environmental strain and create communities that last. 🌎

This is what sustainable change actually looks like.

Tonight, Jennifer, Darwin, and their two
children will fall asleep under the roof of their new
home for the very first time. Safe behind a locking door
and protected from the elements, they can truly rest,
dream, and start to plan their next chapter.

At Shelter Equity, we believe that when a family’s basic
needs at met, their potential becomes limitless. By
dismantling structural barriers through safe housing,
clean water, and mobility, we’ve helped clear the path
so families like Jennifer and Darwin's can focus their
energy on building their legacy.

The horizon just got a lot wider. Welcome Home,
Jennifer and Darwin!

Education shouldn’t depend on where you’re born.

SDG Goal #4 is about making learning accessible for everyone, because opportunity starts there.

At Shelter Equity, we work toward that by creating access through stable housing, clean water, and bicycle mobility. Things that make learning possible.

When the barriers are removed, learning can actually begin.
