A student-produced film from Franklin High School has earned national recognition in one of the countryโ€™s most respected student filmmaking competitions.

"The Note," created by students in Franklin High School's Digital Media Arts class, received an Honorable Mention in the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Center's annual Speak Truth to Power Video Contest. The contest is presented in partnership with the American Federation of Teachers and the Tribeca Festival, one of the world's premier film festivals.

While "The Note" was not selected as an official screening entry at the festival, the film will be recognized during the student film program at Tribeca.

According to Digital Media Arts instructor Shane Pergram, the recognition is a remarkable achievement considering the level of competition.

"Even though it wasn't a screening selection, to receive a mention is insane," Pergram said. "Tribeca is in the top three film festivals worldwide, with only about 1% of films submitted being selected. Most submissions are simply rejected. Our students told an impressive story that some really important people noticed, and how cool is it to get an invite to Tribeca?"

The Speak Truth to Power Video Contest encourages middle school, high school, and college students to use film as a medium to explore human rights issues that are meaningful to them. Students create short films of three to five minutes; they may be in a documentary, narrative, or experimental format.

Per the Robert and Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center website: The contest is designed to help students learn about human rights while developing skills in storytelling, critical thinking, and media production. Organizers emphasize that students from all backgrounds can participate without requiring expensive equipment or prior video editing experience.

Franklin High School students can now complete their driver-education training without leaving campus, thanks to a partnership with B-SAFE Driving Education. B-SAFE offers classes at Carlisle and Trenton locations and now has partnerships with several high schools, including Franklin, to hold training at high school campuses. There is no cost to the district for this program.

Ohio requires teens to complete 24 hours of in-class instruction and 8 hours of in-car instruction. Read more at our district blog: https://ow.ly/56VT50Z9pJ0

We continue to recognize our recent retirees via our Wildcat Farewell posts. Today we honor Steven Sander, who has been an intervention specialist for grades 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 at FJHS, Hunter, and Gerke. He has been married for 33 years and has two sons in their 20s. Sander said, โ€œI started in business for about 20 years, then decided I wanted to help students learn, not just academically, but about life after high school and beyond. One of my boys has multiple disabilities, so I wanted to help other students that struggle with school.โ€ He recalled a favorite memory: โ€œCarolyn Kennedy put on the 6th grade winter choir program in 2024. The boys choir sang, โ€˜Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.โ€™ Mr. Enneking dressed up as the Reindeer, and I dressed up like Grandma. Mr. Enneking ran over me several times on stage during the song.โ€ Sander said that big changes heโ€™s seen over his career include building the new high school, concentrating the intermediate grades, and including 6th grade with the junior high. His retirement plans include pickleball, traveling, [and] โ€œstaying out of my wife's hair.โ€ Steven, we will miss you and wish you a wonderful retirement!

We continue to recognize our recent retirees in our Wildcat Farewell posts. Today we honor Amy Gilmour, who taught 4th, 5th and 6th grades at Gerke Elementary and Franklin Intermediate. She and her husband Scott have been married 32 years; they have two children, Drew and Haley, and one grandchild. She said, โ€œI was fortunate to have teachers who made a real difference in my life. Their encouragement and support inspired me to want to do the same for others. I have loved helping students learn and grow.โ€ Amy added, โ€œI have so many wonderful memories that itโ€™s hard to choose just one. I love when former students see me and reflect on their time in my class. Hearing their kind words and positive memories is always very meaningful and truly warms my heart.โ€ Amy noted that technology was one of the biggest changes she saw over her career. โ€œWhen I first started teaching, we had just one computer for the entire class to share, and students only had about 15 minutes of computer time each week. We didnโ€™t have interactive boards, the internet, or smartphones. Everything was handwrittenโ€”notes, assignments, and even report cardsโ€”and we spent much more time completing the same types of tasks we do today, just in very different ways.โ€ Her retirement plans include spending time with family and friends, traveling, and starting a book club. Amy, we will miss you and wish you a wonderful retirement!
