The Franklin Public Library is considered America's first public library. In 1778, when the town was incorporated, the designated name Exeter was changed to Franklin in honor of Dr. Benjamin Franklin. In return Franklin was asked to donate a bell for the town's church steeple. Acknowledging that "sense" was preferable to "sound", Dr. Franklin responded with an offer of books for the use of the town's residents. When the volumes arrived, a great controversy arose over who should be allowed to use them. On November 20th, 1790, those attending Franklin's town meeting voted to lend the books to all Franklin inhabitants free of charge. This vote established the Franklin collection as the first public library in the United States. The original Franklin collection is still housed in a book case in the circulation department. In 1904, the Ray Memorial Building was dedicated and the Franklin Library got a permanent building - a gift from the Ray family. That same year, the Ray family also established the Ray Memorial fund to provide for and maintain the building. The Franklin Library Association ran the library until 1981 when the Franklin Public Library became a department of the town of Franklin. From 1987 to 1989, the Library underwent extensive restoration to maintain the original beauty and splendor of this beautiful classical Greek structure and to add a children's wing.

Mission: The Mission of the Franklin Public Library is: To increase the presence and stature of the Library within the community, the State, and the Region by: Developing the highest quality information resources ad services through acquisition and cooperative programs; Creating a "sense of place" where residents, students, and researchers can gather for programs, individual study or group interaction and discussion for entertainment, knowledge building and the fostering of wisdom; Reaching out to the community, its schools and colleges to provide resources for nurturing literacy, inquiry, communication, and tolerance; Improving the quality of service we deliver to our patrons, both in person and online, by recruiting, developing and supporting a highly qualified staff of librarians & professionals; Increasing the effectiveness of collections, services, and professional development through strong partnerships with other town departments, networking, and the innovative use of evolving technologies.

SATURDAY Summer Reading Bag BONANZA!

We are so grateful to our families who have signed up for summer reading so far! We've been blown away by the incredible community response, and sign-ups have been rolling in at an amazing pace! YOU ROCK!

We are working as fast as we can to print, staple, and stuff the bags so that they'll be ready when you arrive to pick them up, and we're just barely keeping pace, which is such a wonderful problem to have, but in the interests of not making your day unnecessarily frustrating, we would LOVE to ask a quick favor: would you be willing to wait until Saturday to come pick up your bags so that we can be sure to replenish our summer reading bag stock?

Miss Caleigh is planning to be outside the library (mask on) with a table, laptop, and stash of bags to facilitate quick and easy pickup (plus she'd love to see some of our wonderful families in person!)

THAT'S NOT ALL! To make it even more special, we've got another AWESOME GIANT PUPPET Seek and Find happening on Saturday morning from 10:30-11:30! It's the perfect day to swing by, grab your bags, stroll around downtown and try to spot the giant puppet!

Hi Franklin! Just a quick note, if you are participating in the Kindness Rock Scavenger Hunt, please leave the rocks where you find them. We’ve had 5 rocks go missing from the library grounds this morning and we want to be sure all our friends can participate in this fun activity!

Please just spot them with your eyes and then you can take pictures of the rocks or write down the numbers and letter to unscramble the message later! If you took the rocks earlier, no worries, we just kindly ask that you return them to their hiding spots.

Thank you!!

Miss Bree went a little off script for the drawing part but here is her picture of a flower done with only a pencil and eraser (and her fingers to smudge it up a bit!)! It was so fun and messier than she expected!!
