Two firefighters. One raging fire. A timeless tradition of courage and dedication.
This powerful black-and-white photograph captures two firefighters standing in the shadows of an intense blaze, surrounded by flames, smoke, and destruction.
With their traditional fire helmets silhouetted against the fire, these firefighters represent a generation of men and women who faced incredible dangers with equipment and protective gear far different from what firefighters use today.
There were no modern thermal imaging cameras, advanced protective clothing, or many of the safety technologies we now depend on. Firefighting required determination, teamwork, experience, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others.
Although the equipment, apparatus, and tactics have evolved over the decades, the heart of the fire service has never changed.
The courage to enter when others are escaping. The willingness to risk everything to save a stranger. The brotherhood and sisterhood built through shared sacrifice.
At the Franklin–Bingham Farms Fire Department, we recognize and honor the firefighters who came before us. Their dedication, sacrifices, and traditions helped build the fire service we proudly serve in today.
The equipment has changed. The training has evolved. But the courage, commitment, and calling remain the same.

🚒🔥 FIRE SAFETY ALERT: SMALL DEVICE, BIG RISK! 🔥🚒
📱 PHONE CHARGING SAFETY — CHARGE SMART, PREVENT A FIRE!
The Franklin–Bingham Farms Fire Department would like to remind everyone about the dangers of improperly charging cell phones and other devices powered by lithium-ion batteries.
We use these devices every day, but did you know that a damaged battery, faulty charging cord, or improper charging habits can lead to overheating, fires, and even explosions?
⚠️ A FIRE CAN START WHILE YOU SLEEP!
Charging your phone underneath a pillow, on your bed, or on a couch can create a serious fire hazard. Heat can become trapped, increasing the risk of overheating and ignition.
✅ PHONE CHARGING SAFETY TIPS:
🔹 Always use the original or manufacturer-approved charger and charging cable.
🔹 Charge your phone on a hard, flat surface, away from anything that can catch fire.
🔹 NEVER charge your phone underneath pillows, blankets, or on your bed.
🔹 Inspect charging cords regularly. Replace damaged, frayed, or overheating cords.
🔹 Avoid overloading electrical outlets or power strips.
🔹 Keep charging devices away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
🔹 Whenever possible, charge devices while you are awake and able to monitor them.
⚠️ KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS!
Stop using or charging your device immediately if you notice:
❌ A battery that is swollen or bulging.
❌ Excessive heat while charging.
❌ Unusual odors or a burning smell.
❌ Hissing, popping, or crackling sounds.
❌ Smoke, leaking fluid, or visible damage.
🚨 WHAT IF YOUR PHONE OR BATTERY CATCHES FIRE?
🔥 Do not attempt to pick up or move a burning device.
🔥 Immediately evacuate the area and alert others.
🔥 Close the door behind you if it is safe to do so.
🔥 Once outside, call 911.
🔥 Never re-enter the building until emergency personnel say it is safe.
🏠 REMEMBER: FIRE SAFETY STARTS AT HOME!
Make sure your home has working smoke alarms on every level, inside every bedroom, and outside sleeping areas.
A simple change in your charging habits could prevent a devastating house fire.

🚒🩸 – STOP THE BLEED! 🩸🚒
Franklin–Bingham Farms Fire Department – Station 13
🚨 KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN SECONDS COUNT!
Severe bleeding can become life-threatening in just minutes. Whether it's a car accident, workplace injury, household accident, or other emergency, knowing how to control bleeding could mean the difference between life and death.
🩸 HOW TO STOP LIFE-THREATENING BLEEDING:
1️⃣ CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY! 📞
Call for emergency assistance or have someone nearby call while you begin providing care.
2️⃣ APPLY DIRECT PRESSURE! ✋
Use both hands to apply firm, continuous pressure directly to the wound with gauze, a clean cloth, or your hands if necessary. Maintain pressure until help arrives.
3️⃣ USE A TOURNIQUET FOR SEVERE ARM OR LEG BLEEDING!
If a commercial tourniquet is available:
Place it 2–3 inches above the wound, between the wound and the torso, avoiding joints.
Tighten the strap and twist the windlass until the bleeding stops.
Secure the windlass in place.
Do NOT loosen or remove the tourniquet once applied. Leave it for medical professionals.
4️⃣ IF A TOURNIQUET IS NOT AVAILABLE:
Continue applying firm, direct pressure. For wounds in areas where a tourniquet cannot be used, maintain pressure and follow the 911 dispatcher's instructions.
5️⃣ STAY WITH THE INJURED PERSON!
Keep the person as still as possible, help keep them warm, and continue monitoring them until emergency personnel arrive.

🧑‍🚒 BEHIND THE SCENES: ANNUAL LADDER TRUCK PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE! 🚒🪜
Today, firefighters from the Franklin–Bingham Farms Fire Department spent time performing annual preventative maintenance on our ladder truck.
While the public often sees our firefighters responding to emergencies, there is a tremendous amount of work that takes place behind the scenes to ensure our apparatus and equipment are ready when needed.
Today's maintenance included cleaning, inspecting, and caring for components of the aerial ladder system. This annual preventative maintenance helps keep the ladder operating properly, reduces wear and tear, and allows firefighters to identify potential issues before they become bigger problems.
🚒 WHY IS PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE IMPORTANT?
✅ Helps maintain the safety and reliability of our apparatus.
✅ Extends the service life of expensive firefighting equipment.
✅ Helps identify potential mechanical problems early.
✅ Keeps our equipment ready for emergency operations.
✅ Helps protect both our firefighters and the community we serve.
A fire truck is only as dependable as the maintenance and care it receives.

🚒🚑 PUBLIC SAFETY REMINDER — HELP US HELP YOU! 🚒🚑
CAN WE FIND YOUR ADDRESS? CAN OUR EMERGENCY VEHICLES GET DOWN YOUR DRIVEWAY?
The Franklin–Bingham Farms Fire Department would like to remind all residents during Fire Prevention Week that every second counts during an emergency!
When you call 911, our firefighters and EMS personnel need to locate your home quickly and safely. Whether responding to a fire, medical emergency, or rescue, a clearly marked address and an accessible driveway can make a critical difference.
🏠 IF YOU CAN'T SEE YOUR ADDRESS DURING THE DAY, HOW WILL EMERGENCY SERVICES FIND YOU WHEN IT COUNTS?
🔴 MAKE YOUR ADDRESS EASY TO FIND!
✅ Make sure your house numbers are clearly visible from the street.
✅ Keep your mailbox and address sign visible from both directions of travel.
✅ Use large, reflective numbers that can be seen during the day and at night.
✅ Trim bushes, trees, and landscaping that block your address.
✅ Keep your mailbox and address sign clear of snow, weeds, and debris.
🚒 CAN A FIRE TRUCK OR AMBULANCE FIT DOWN YOUR DRIVEWAY?
Our emergency vehicles are larger and heavier than passenger vehicles. Narrow driveways, low-hanging branches, parked vehicles, and other obstructions can prevent us from reaching your home.
✅ Trim overhanging branches and vegetation.
✅ Maintain at least 12 feet of driveway width and 13 feet, 6 inches of overhead clearance as a general guideline. Some emergency vehicles and local requirements may require more.
✅ Keep vehicles, trailers, garbage containers, and other obstacles out of the driveway.
✅ Make sure gates and entrances provide adequate access.
✅ Maintain a driveway surface capable of supporting heavy emergency vehicles.
✅ Provide adequate room for emergency vehicles to turn around whenever possible.
✅ During winter, keep your driveway plowed, salted, and free of ice.
🚨 REMEMBER — EVERY SECOND COUNTS!
Imagine calling 911 for a loved one experiencing a medical emergency or discovering a fire in your home, only to have responding crews delayed because they cannot locate your address or safely access your driveway.
A few minutes of preparation today could save valuable minutes during an emergency tomorrow.

🚨🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DON'T WAIT, CHECK THE DATE! 🔥🚨
WORKING SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES! 🚒
During Fire Prevention Week, your Franklin–Bingham Farms Fire Department wants to remind everyone that smoke alarms are one of the most important safety devices in your home.
But did you know that smoke alarms don't last forever? Even if your alarm still sounds when tested, it may be time to replace it!
🚨 WHEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR SMOKE ALARMS?
✅ Replace smoke alarms 10 years from the date of manufacture, or sooner if recommended by the manufacturer.
✅ Check the manufacturing date on the back of each alarm.
✅ Test your smoke alarms at least once a month.
✅ Replace batteries as recommended by the manufacturer. If your alarm uses replaceable batteries, change them at least once a year.
✅ If your smoke alarm continues chirping after troubleshooting, replace it if necessary. Never disable an alarm.
🏠 WHERE SHOULD SMOKE ALARMS BE INSTALLED?
For the best protection, smoke alarms should be installed:
🔴 Inside every bedroom — to alert you while sleeping.
🔴 Outside each separate sleeping area — such as hallways near bedrooms.
🔴 On every level of your home — including the basement.
🔴 Near stairways — following recommended placement guidelines.
🔴 In larger homes — additional smoke alarms may be necessary.
For maximum protection, consider interconnected smoke alarms. When one alarm sounds, they all sound!
⚠️ IMPORTANT SMOKE ALARM SAFETY TIPS
🔥 Keep smoke alarms at least 10 feet away from cooking appliances whenever possible to reduce nuisance alarms.
🔥 Follow manufacturer instructions for ceiling or wall mounting.
🔥 Keep alarms away from windows, doors, and air vents that could interfere with smoke detection.
🔥 Never paint over or cover a smoke alarm.
🔥 Consider combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms where appropriate. Remember that carbon monoxide protection is also important!
🚪 HAVE A HOME FIRE ESCAPE PLAN!
A working smoke alarm provides an early warning, but your family must know what to do when it sounds.
✔️ Know two ways out of every room.
✔️ Practice your home escape plan with everyone in your household.
✔️ Choose a safe meeting place outside.
✔️ Close doors behind you as you escape, if possible.
✔️ Once outside, stay outside and call 911.

🎃 FRANKLINSTEIN FRENZY IS COMING TO HISTORIC FRANKLIN! 👻🍬
Get your costumes ready and bring the whole family out for a spooktacular day in the Village of Franklin!
📅 Saturday, October 24, 2026
🕚 Activities begin at 11:00 AM
Main Street Franklin’s Franklinstein Frenzy will feature plenty of Halloween fun for all ages, including merchant savings, a Trick-or-Treat Parade, trick-or-treating throughout the business district, complimentary donuts and c***r at the library, arts & crafts, adoptable dogs, and the always-fun Pumpkin Roll! 🎃
The Trick-or-Treat Parade lineup begins at 11:45 AM at 32682 Franklin Road (former Comerica Bank), with the parade stepping off at 12:00 PM.
🎃 Pumpkin Roll registration begins at 12:30 PM at Kreger House, followed by the Pumpkin Roll at 12:45 PM.
Come dressed in your Halloween best and enjoy a great afternoon with your friends, family, neighbors, and local community!

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK: EDITH — Exit Drills In The Home 🔥
A home fire can become dangerous in just minutes. Having a plan—and practicing that plan—can make a lifesaving difference.
EDITH (Exit Drills In The Home) helps every member of your household know exactly what to do if the smoke alarm sounds.
🏠 Make a home escape plan. Draw a simple floor plan and identify two ways out of every room whenever possible.
🚪 Make sure doors and windows used for escape open easily and are not blocked.
🚨 Have working smoke alarms throughout your home and make sure everyone recognizes the sound.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Practice your escape plan with the entire family, including children.
🌙 Practice during both the day and at night so everyone is prepared.
🌳 Choose a permanent outside meeting place—such as a tree, mailbox, or other safe location away from the home.
📞 Once outside, stay outside and call 911 from a safe location. Never go back inside a burning home for people, pets, or belongings.
When the smoke alarm sounds, everyone should know: GET OUT, STAY OUT, and MEET OUTSIDE.
Take time during Fire Prevention Week to practice an EDITH drill with your family. A few minutes of preparation today could save a life tomorrow.

🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK: CLOSE BEFORE YOU DOZE 🔥
During Fire Prevention Week, the Franklin–Bingham Farms Fire Department reminds everyone that one simple habit can make a major difference during a house fire: close your bedroom door before you go to sleep.
A closed door can help slow the spread of fire, heat, and toxic smoke, creating a safer space and potentially giving you valuable additional time to escape. An open door allows heat and smoke to spread much more quickly.
🏠 Make “Close Before You Doze” part of your family’s nighttime routine:
Close bedroom doors before going to sleep.
Make sure working smoke alarms are installed inside and outside sleeping areas and on every level of your home.
Have a home fire escape plan and practice it with everyone in your household.
If a fire occurs, get out, stay out, and call 911.
As you escape, close doors behind you when possible to help slow the spread of fire.

🚒 Franklin–Bingham Farms Fire Department — Monthly Training
Training today, prepared for tomorrow.
This month, members of the Franklin–Bingham Farms Fire Department participated in hands-on training designed to strengthen the skills, teamwork, and coordination needed on the fireground.
A special thank you goes to the property owner who generously donated the house to the Fire Department for training purposes. Having access to an actual residential structure provides our firefighters with an invaluable opportunity to train in a realistic environment before the home is removed.
Training included roof operations, ventilation operations, hose stretching and advancement drills, and DTE meter removal. Crews were able to practice these skills throughout the structure while working together just as they would during an actual incident.
To make the scenarios even more realistic, firefighters worked in simulated smoke conditions using a theatrical/movie smoke machine. This allowed crews to practice operating with reduced visibility while focusing on communication, hose advancement, coordination, and fireground safety.
Opportunities like this are extremely valuable to our department. Regular hands-on training helps our firefighters sharpen their skills, build confidence, and prepare for the challenges they may encounter when the alarm sounds.
We sincerely appreciate the donation of the home and the opportunity it provided our members to train in a realistic setting.
