Tonight, a new queen will be crowned to represent the Johnson County 4-H Fair, beginning a journey of service, leadership, and community pride.

As we celebrate this year’s contestants, it’s inspiring to look back at those who have worn the crown before. One of those individuals is Lauren (Hughes) Swartz, who truly turned her title into a lifetime of service.

After serving as Johnson County Fair Queen in 2019, Lauren made it her mission to give back. Today, she proudly serves as the Director of the Johnson County Fair Queen Contest, mentoring and encouraging the next generation of young women to lead with character, confidence, and compassion.

Her dedication to serving others extends far beyond the fairgrounds. Lauren also serves Johnson County as a Deputy Coroner, walking alongside families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives providing compassion, dignity, and answers when a loved one is lost.

This weekend marks four years since the tragic mass shooting at Greenwood Park Mall that forever changed our community.

Today, we pause to remember the victims whose lives were taken far too soon, and we continue to keep their families, friends, and everyone affected in our thoughts. We also recognize Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS ,Coroner Staff, Civilian Elisjsha Dicken, and all those who came together in the aftermath of that heartbreaking day.

May we never forget the lives lost, and may we continue to stand together as a community with compassion, strength, and hope.

The victims are husband and wife, Pedro Pineda, 56, and Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda, 37, and Victor Gomez, 30, a father of three. In just fifteen seconds, three people, whose families said they had so much to live for, were gone.

MOMENT OF SILENCE: We ask you to join us for a moment of silence in honor and recognition of Virginia for her lifesaving gift of organ donation. The magnitude of this decision, to save those most in need, is to be honored and admired. In this moment, we regard Virginia with respect and dignity above all else.

"My mom, Ginny, was a force! She was the most devoted mom and mamaw, constantly bragging about her daughter, granddaughter and grandson to anyone who would listen. She had a snappy comeback or sarcastic comment for anything someone threw her way. She was dedicated to serving and volunteered her time to many causes, but was most dedicated to breast cancer awareness. My mom leaves a giant hole in the lives of so many people. My own life will never be the same, but the kids and I are honored to have been loved so fiercely by her and blessed to have the sassiest guardian angel now. Until we meet again, momma. We love you."

-Tribute submitted by Virginia's family.
