The Washington Parish Fire Chiefs Association would like to extend our sincere thanks to the communications officers of the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office for their hard work and dedication last night.

Dispatchers coordinated responses to approximately 33 weather-related incidents across the parish, ensuring that fire districts, Washington Parish Public Works, and local utility companies were notified and able to respond appropriately. Their professionalism and coordination played a critical role in keeping our community safe.

We would also like to thank all first responders who worked throughout the night to help ensure our roadways were safe for the citizens of Washington Parish.

If you observe any hazards or storm-related issues, please contact the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office at 985-839-3434 so the appropriate resources can be dispatched.

Thank you to everyone who continues to serve and protect our community.

Home Heating Safety from the Louisiana State Fire Marshall:

If you use a space heater, make sure it is placed 3-5 feet away from objects that can catch fire easily like blankets or furniture.

Ensure space heaters are plugged directly into a wall outlet as opposed to an extension cord or power strip

Space heaters should always be turned off when you’re going to sleep or leaving the room and/or home

DO NOT use ovens or stoves to heat your home

Make sure any open flames, like fireplaces or candles are never left unattended

Have a working smoke alarm

Have a working carbon monoxide detector

On this Thanksgiving, a heartfelt thank-you to all our first responders spending the day on duty instead of at the table with loved ones. Your sacrifice, courage, and commitment keep our communities safe every single day. We are grateful for you—today and always. 🦃💙

You might as well turn this sucker off!

All the fire departments in the county need help. We’ve heard all the excuses. I can’t commit to (fill in the blank), I’m not always available, I’m too young/old, I don’t know anything about it. They are just excuses. We are all volunteers. We can when we can and we can’t when we can’t.

This is an incredible job you get paid for in ways that aren’t money. If you’ve ever thought about it, contact the VFD in your area. The hardest part, is walking through that station door the first time.

We all live in the community we serve. How can you make a difference?

Every fire department across the country needs help.
