Wednesday was a very special day for many of our inmates.

After months of planning with assistance from Hope Alive and Mount Hermon United Pentecostal Church, over 35 inmates attended a service and were baptized.

We are so grateful to everyone involved in creating experiences like these, providing hope, encouragement and an opportunity for growth.

Franklinton, LA (June 12, 2026) – On June 12 at approximately 1:36 a.m., the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office received a 911 call reporting gunshots on Bud Slocum Road in Franklinton.

Responding deputies learned that Lieutenant Jay Dupre of our Criminal Patrol Division was among those involved. Lieutenant Dupre was off duty, out of uniform, and not operating an office vehicle at the time. No one was shot or injured.

Given the serious nature of the allegations, I requested that the Louisiana State Police conduct an independent criminal investigation. After reviewing the initial facts, I terminated Lieutenant Dupre's employment with the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office.

Deputies must conduct themselves professionally and lawfully, on duty and off. That standard does not bend for rank or years of service.

Dupre served this office for 15 years, and that service was real. His conduct in this matter fell below the standard I expect, and I acted on it.

The criminal investigation is ongoing. All further questions should be directed to the Louisiana State Police, who will issue any additional comments.

Washington Parish Sheriff in Search of Donations, Dog and Cat Food

Thank you for your generous donations during our previous initiatives. It is because of you all that we have been able to disperse this feed to animals in need.

As the number of strays in Washington Parish continues to rise, Sheriff Jason Smith is kindly asking for donations of cat and dog food. With warmer weather, we are seeing a rapid increase in kittens throughout the parish.

Our deputies use the feed daily, transporting it to animals living with families in need and in the handling of strays. In doing so, we aim to prevent dumping or starvation and minimize the number of strays in an already crowded shelter.

Depending on the situation, many of these animals may have a large appetite and need full, balanced meals to maintain their health and well-being. To be able to provide these meals, we are asking for donations of dog and cat food from the public and local businesses.

Any donations will be accepted, and we are asking that they be dropped off at the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office in Bogalusa or Franklinton. Dry food, wet food, canned, bagged, recently expired—our animals aren’t picky eaters, and we will graciously accept anything that you are willing to donate.

Thanks again for your help as we work hard to ensure the safety of animals and the public.

‼️Scam Alert‼️

Several citizens in Washington Parish have been victims of a phone scam in which a caller impersonates a Washington Parish deputy and claims the victim can pay a certain amount to quickly bond out an inmate.

Be aware that deputies from the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office or any other law enforcement agents will never ask for money or sensitive information over the phone.

If you receive a suspicious call, hang up, block the caller and call our office at 985-839-3434 to verify the phone number.

Scams like this can come from several different phone numbers, and these people are good at masking their location and voice. They frequently target the elderly and are good at manipulating people, so everyone should remain alert.

Please share this post to make more members of our community aware of this recent scam.
