I’ll be here Sunday if anyone would like to come out! Great chance to show solidarity with our brothers on strike and teach our kids what the collective bargaining process looks like!

I grew up hearing stories of my grandfather supporting a family working as a grocery clerk in the Union at Kroger, that’s why I’ve been a member of the CWA for a decade now.

Made some time to stop and try Tammy’s Country Kitchen today before our data center meeting! Again, this is not an endorsement of me from this business but my endorsement of this food and local business!

I was recommended to try this place out because they may have seen a drop in business due to the roadwork forcing traffic further around from the Buffalo Bridge. It’s crazy how big of a difference it makes to small businesses if we don’t plan out our infrastructure maintenance properly.

If you’ve been through Cross Lanes during their road widening project you can see the perfect example of what NOT to do. Businesses barely hanging on because the complicated access routes to their parking lot made customers think they weren’t even open.

All because of some bureaucracy that didn’t once involve asking the businesses impacted what could be done to help support them.

I got to Tammy’s right at 5:30, the place was pretty busy! I think I walked in right after a few other tables as they were just getting their drinks.

The menu says “come in as a stranger, leave as a friend” and that was absolutely true because I think I was the only stranger in the building. I could hear some tables ordering and it seemed like if she didn’t already know your order she at least knew your name!

I went with the Carolina Pork BBQ plate, they’ll ask if you’ve had it there before to make sure you understand what Carolina BBQ means. I like to at least pretend I know my way around a smoker so I know a classic Carolina sauce is vinegar based and the meat soaks in it. You might be confused if you’re expecting a tomato/ketchup based sauce.

The plate comes with a side of fries, 3 hushpuppies, and cole slaw. I swapped the slaw for macaroni, no problem at all! Everything was fresh, the fries and hushpuppies both were crispy. You might think the pork would be dry if you don’t understand the Carolina style, it was delicious and juicy!

I’m not crazy about this style of macaroni; I prefer a more cheesy, gooey macaroni than the runny style if that makes sense. My cousin absolutely loves Cracker Barrel macaroni so this would be a 10/10 for her though!

My only regret here was that I didn’t have time for chocolate cake. While I was waiting to pay my tab I see they had a sign that reads “Be kind to those that are unkind. They need it the most” and that is something I know I need to hear every now and then myself so I wanted to push that further out to the world.

I paid less than $11 for this plate with taxes (not tip obviously), that is an amazing value! I think I have to come back and try the steak hoagie and onion rings on the next trip. If you’re in the area, or even if you’re not and just want good food at a great price, this is a great decision. The whole time I was there they had takeout orders flying out the door!

Let me know what other Putnam County small businesses I should review! Anyone who would like to meet up anywhere that fits that criteria to talk politics or data centers, you choose the place and I’ll buy the first appetizer!

Some people say that food isn’t political, I disagree. Food is something we can bond over because we all have it in common; everyone has to eat. That is exactly what makes it political though, it is a NEED.

As long as there are hungry veterans, hungry children, or anyone else dealing with food insecurity there will be politics behind it. Who is eating and who isn’t? Who can afford the money and/or time to eat healthy and who can’t? These are very political questions we have to answer and find solutions to.

I want to focus on things we have in common and one of the easiest is food. Now that I have a small audience on this account I’m going to make sure to use the platform to help my community so I’ll be starting a series of food reviews for small businesses here in Putnam County! There are so many good, local restaurants in the area that a lot of people just do not know about.

I can’t stress enough this isn’t an endorsement of me from any of these locations but the opposite: my endorsement of the food and service at each location I post about. If they’d like to show support for me, I’d always appreciate it, but if not, I understand and I’m still trying to support your business either way!

Today I stopped by Sergio’s on Main Street in Hurricane! I’ve been here plenty of times and already knew the food would be good but I chose this restaurant to start with because just last week I had someone on my timeline asking if they were even still open.

If you remember about a year ago their Facebook account had been hijacked at some point during the transition of ownership when Sergio sold his businesses. This resulted in someone being VERY rude (but also slightly hilarious) towards some customers that were just posting basic complaints.

Well they’re definitely still open and just as good as ever! I came in a bit after five, right when every restaurant starts to get busy. There may have only been two people working front of house but they were doing a dang good job, I never had an empty glass!

I went with the Chicken Parmigiana with a Caesar salad. He told me that they make the Caesar and ranch dressings in house and you can definitely tell, best Caesar salad around here. It came out quickly and was accompanied by a basket of fresh breadsticks (I was offered a refill but in no way did I need more bread lol).

This chicken parmigiana might be the best I’ve had that didn’t come out of my own kitchen (yes, I can cook!) Very generous portions served over spaghetti with marinara, chicken was very crispy and the whole plate was steaming hot!

I didn’t get it today but the other thing my girlfriend and I are obsessed with here would be the chicken Alfredo fries! Crispy waffle fries topped with chicken and Alfredo sauce, simple and addictive. It’s labeled an appetizer but that hasn’t stopped it from being my entree!

They also have very good lunch deals, only $14 for pasta, salad, and a drink! The only problem I have with this place is that it’s not down the street here in Poca.

Again, this is me endorsing this establishment, not the other way around. I just want to see small businesses in the area grow and thrive! This is an open invitation for anyone who would like to sit down and talk politics with me: you pick the local, small business to eat at and I’ll buy the first appetizer, I won’t even charge it to the campaign!

Please let me know what other local Putnam County restaurants that you think may benefit from a little bit of a shout out from me on here, I’ve got a small list I’ve put together already but I’d love to turn it into a whole spreadsheet of recommendations!

So I just want to make sure I’m connecting the dots correctly here.

Delegate Roger Hanshaw, Speaker of the House, pushes HB2014 giving MASSIVE incentives to big tech to build high-impact AI data centers in the state. The bill takes away local control for ordinances and reroutes property taxes away from the counties that should be collecting them. The revenue could go towards the things we authorize for levies on ourselves (ie increasing taxes) every single election cycle: your emergency services, your schools, your infrastructure.

The man waits until session is over to announce to the ethics committee that he’s got a MAJOR conflict of interest because he’s now legal representation for two different companies handling data centers in the state AGAINST West Virginia citizens who want to make sure they’re not being harmed.

Another week or two and it’s announced that Google is opening the data center campus (as in more than one center most likely) in Buffalo.

Roger Hanshaw happens to own Vandalia Growers LLC, the greenhouses in Buffalo. Here is a Google Earth (yes I see the irony, not AI) view of that property. The second picture is the property already purchased for this data center.

Now please tell me there wasn’t an insane conflict of interest in the proposal of this bill from EVERY angle (not even getting into campaign finances). I’m just curious how much money he’ll make once that tiny sliver of land is sold too.

It really kills me to see our state and our communities sold out to billionaires so a few greedy people can become millionaires. I honestly almost feel sorry for some of our representatives that got conned into voting for that bill, their names are attached to it and they’re not even seeing all the windfalls like Hanshaw is.

It’s not too late to change your mind and your vote though, this next session will absolutely see legislation brought to fix this bill so that the people of West Virginia may still have a voice. I’m going to make sure of that, working with any and every Delegate or Senator that will listen. We even had the Democratic nominee against US Congresswoman Carol Miller, Vince George at the last meeting.

We have less than 6 months to get our prospective candidates on board with repealing this bill. There were attempts made last session by Republicans even so this is NOT a partisan issue, it’s who is for the people and who is for the product.

I don’t care if you’re Republican, Democrat, or Independent you need to call or email the options you have on your ballot before November and remind them of what will drive you to the polls. They can decide if that’s in favor of them, or against them.
