Falloween came early to the playroom! ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‚

Saturday was Parentsโ€™ Night Out at SHIFT, and the kids spent the evening painting pumpkins, playing Falloween games, and getting a little messy (the best kind of fun). Parents got a night to themselves, and the kids got a pumpkin party.

Our staffed, onsite playroom is for kids ages 18 months to 6 years, and PNO nights are one of our favorite ways to give our members a well-deserved break.

Small update, but a good one: our parking lot got repaved this week. โœจ

We also quietly upgraded our front door lock recently, one of those changes you donโ€™t think about (much) until itโ€™s better. Smoother entry, one less thing to deal with.

Little things, but they add up. ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ”‘

Please help us welcome Olivia to the SHIFT team! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘‹

Olivia is our new Playroom Manager and is working toward her degree to become a Neuro Sonography Technician. She brings a variety of childcare experience, including as a Childcare Team Lead at the YMCA of Frederick and as a Registered Behavior Technician working one-on-one with children with autism and other developmental disabilities. She's also skilled in ASL and loves helping deaf families and children communicateโ€”and teaching a few signs to everyone along the way. ๐Ÿ˜„

Olivia believes no child should ever feel isolated or treated differently, and that kind of care and intention is exactly what we look for in our playroom team.

Welcome to SHIFT, Olivia! We're excited to have you. ๐Ÿ’›

Please help us welcome Kyla to the SHIFT team! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘‹

Kyla is our new playroom attendant, currently working toward her Early Childhood Education degree at Mount St. Mary's University. She brings hands-on experience from Frederick County Parks & Rec, where she started as inclusion support staff before becoming a camp counselor and assistant coordinator.

Kyla loves being around kids and watching their personalities grow. She's especially passionate about being a steady source of comfort and support for the children she works with. Outside of SHIFT, you'll find her reading or making memories with the people she loves.

We're so glad to have her energy and heart in the playroom. Welcome, Kyla! ๐Ÿ’›

Two hours. One bin of wooden blocks. Endless imagination. ๐Ÿงฑ

Today we built towering stacks, turned a pile of blocks into a haunted house, improvised a hockey game, and made a few things I still canโ€™t quite explain (but loved anyway). This is what open-ended play looks like โ€” no screens, no instructions, just kids figuring things out.

Block play builds so much more than towers: spatial reasoning, fine motor skills, patience, problem-solving, and serious collaboration and creativity. Simple materials, big brain-building. โœจ

Not a bad way to spend a Tuesday. ๐Ÿ’™

Weโ€™re proud to support Stuff the Bus with United Way of Frederick County, Maryland!

Through August 3, weโ€™re collecting new, unused school supplies to help local students start the school year prepared and ready to learn.

Members can help by donating items like backpacks, notebooks, pencils, crayons, folders, and other classroom essentials. The big yellow bin is back in its usual spot by the front door!

Not a member? No problem! Shoot us a message to schedule a drop off, or book that tour you've been meaning to schedule and bring your donation along!

Together, we can help students throughout Frederick County head back to school with confidence.
