If you’ve been in Montessori for long, you’ve probably heard this: We don’t say “good job.”

But why?

“Good job” is simply our judgment. I think what you did was good. It doesn’t tell the child much about what they actually did.

Instead, we can notice.

“You spent a long time on that painting. I see you used a lot of green.”

“You put your shoes on all by yourself.”

“You hung your coat on that really tall hook.”

“That looked hard, but you kept trying.”

“You mashed the whole banana.”

These words have meaning. They tell the child, I see you. I see your effort. I see what you did.

“Good job” is easy. Taking the time to really notice is so much more meaningful.

It’s been a busy summer at CCM! Boxes were packed at our old school, moved to our new building, and delivered to their new classrooms — and now, those classrooms are beginning to come to life.

While our full staff officially returns on Thursday, some of our staff members have already started making their way in, unpacking boxes, arranging spaces, and preparing for the year ahead.

And as we settle in, we’re mindful that this building has a story that began long before us. Since the 1950s, generations of Yellow Springs students and staff have learned, worked, and grown here. We’re grateful for the care that came before us and proud to be the next caretakers of this space.

There’s still lots to do, but with each unpacked box and each familiar face walking through the doors, our new (to us) building is starting to feel more and more like CCM. 💙🤍

Yesterday we had a very special visit from Go Team Therapy Dogs Frederick—and it was the highlight of the day! 🐾

A big thank you to the wonderful handlers and the incredible therapy dogs for sharing their time, care, and calm presence with our students and staff. So many smiles all around! 💙

✨ Building Community Starts with Us ✨

As part of our ongoing restorative practices work, our staff engaged in an inside-out circle during today’s training—connecting, reflecting, and experiencing the kinds of structures that support strong, peaceful classroom communities.

As Maria Montessori said, “The environment itself will teach the child.” Today, our staff focused on the role we play in creating that environment—one rooted in connection, communication, and care. 💙

We did it, CCMPCS community! 💙

Thanks to your incredible efforts, we’ve officially reached our goal of collecting 1,000 #2 plastic items—enough to earn our very own Peace Bench for our new campus! ♻️🌿

This project, led by our Student Governing Council, is about more than recycling. It’s about coming together as a community, taking care of our environment, and creating a special space where students can pause, reflect, and reconnect.

Thank you to every student, family, and staff member who contributed. Your small actions added up to something truly meaningful—and lasting.

We can’t wait to see our Peace Bench at our new home next year! 💫🐬

P.S. All plastic items were removed from the bags before recycling and bags were recycled separately. ♻️

Students in 6th grade Spanish 1 brought out all their best cooking skills recently while making elote en vaso, or Mexican street corn cups. As part of their exploration on traditional Latin American foods, students analyzed a variety of authentic recipes and described their personal food preferences. As a fun extension, they put their Spanish and food prep abilities to use making this popular and easy-to-prepare dish, and they each took home a copy of the Spanish recipe.

They also did a fantastic and thorough job cleaning and restoring. The classroom sparkled when they were done!

We had such a FUN time at Spring Fest on Friday! 🌺🌿

This was our second annual Spring Fest, organized by our incredible Student Governing Council to come together, celebrate the season, and connect outdoors as a school family. This year’s theme, “Spring into New Beginnings,” was especially meaningful as we look ahead to our move to a new campus—honoring both the growth we’ve shared and the exciting future ahead.

There was so much to explore including: hands on learning about bee pollination (and tasting local honey!), a plant swap, a free lemonade stand, nature mandalas, face painting, giant bubbles, the City Nature Challenge, monarch butterfly migration and craft, “new beginnings” collaborative art, learning about chickens, eggs and 4H and a Story Walk.

Thank you to our amazing students, families and staff who volunteered to make it all possible—we loved seeing all the smiling faces— and we’re so excited to continue to grow this tradition in the years to come!

We’re excited to share some wonderful news from last weekend’s FCPS Science Fair. Two of our outstanding Middle School students, Favor and Hasini, earned an Honorable Mention for their project, “CycleSense,” which explored the impact of menstruation on neurodivergent teens.

In addition, Hasini was awarded First Place for her cover art design for the FCPS Science Fair booklet—what an incredible accomplishment!

Mrs. Jiwani’s Primary classroom is making a big impact! 🌎♻️ Students are contributing daily to our recycling challenge as we work toward earning a bench for our new school.

We are so close to our goal of collecting 1,000 pieces of #2 plastic—so far we’ve collected 906 items! 🎉

We are so proud of their dedication, their strong sense of responsibility, and their commitment to protecting our environment!
