The Fredericksburg Police Department is actively investigating three separate assault incidents that occurred between October 2025 and May 2026 along the Canal Path, Heritage Trail and Ficklen Island. Detectives are working to determine whether any of the cases are connected, though no link has been confirmed at this time. The Department is urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue to pursue all available leads. The Department notes that these cases are separate from prior sexual assault cases reported in March 2026, in which a suspect is currently incarcerated awaiting trial.

The victim reported she was walking on the path after leaving the Fredericksburg Shopping Center when she was approached and assaulted by an unknown male after passing under the Emancipation Highway Bridge headed toward Cossey Pond. The suspect fled the scene on foot prior to officersโ arrival. A K9 track was conducted with negative results. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 6โ0โ tall, with dark hair, wearing a black hoodie and blue pants.
On Sunday, May 31, 2026, between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., the Fredericksburg E-911 Center received a report of a violent assault on Ficklen Island. The victim stated that she was sitting on a large rock by the river on Ficklen Island when she was approached and assaulted by an unknown male. A K9 track was conducted, and the area was also searched by the Fredericksburg and Stafford drone teams. The suspect is described as a short Hispanic male wearing a black shirt and black slide sandals.
All three investigations remain active and ongoing, and no arrests have been made. The Fredericksburg Police Department has dedicated more than 163 hours of patrol time since March on the Canal Path and surrounding areas, supplementing regular patrol operations to enhance public safety through patrols conducted during weekdays, weekends, and nighttime hours. Police Chief Mason and the Parks, Recreations and Events Director Casarotti have also discussed ongoing efforts to maintain safe public spaces throughout the community during a City Council Work Session on May 26, 2026. ๐https://www.regionalwebtv.com/fredcc
The Fredericksburg Police Department is offering a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest in any of these investigations. Reward amounts will be based on the value and impact of the information provided.
The City of Fredericksburg takes these incidents very seriously. The Fredericksburg Police will continue to increase patrols along the canal path while remaining committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens. We remind community members to stay vigilant while walking or exercising outdoors, especially after dark, and to promptly report any suspicious activity. When walking at night and in areas that are not well lit, it is always good practice to walk with a friend. Keep one ear free if listening to music, and always carry a charged phone.
