🏈 Sometimes the best team-building happens without a playbook! 🐯

This past Friday, Coach Quintana switched things up and got our Walker-Grant football players together for a little old-school backyard touch football!

No pads. No pressure. Just some healthy competition, plenty of trash talk 😉, lots of laughs, and a chance to enjoy the game together.

Because building a great team is about more than what happens during practice. It’s about building trust, friendships, and a sense of brotherhood that carries onto the field when it matters most.

Judging by the smiles (and the competitive spirit 😆), we’d say this one was a WIN! 🏈🧡🖤

☕️Coffee, community & a little teacher appreciation! ☕️

We kicked off our first Coffee Cart of the year today, thanks to the generosity of our Walker-Grant Middle School PTO and ZIPS Cleaners!

Our sponsors know just how much our incredible teachers and staff pour into their students every single day, and they wanted to make sure they felt a little of that appreciation poured right back into them. ❤️

We are so grateful for community partners like ZIPS Cleaners and our amazing PTO who continue to show up for Walker-Grant. When our families, schools, and community work together, everyone benefits - and our school becomes an even stronger place for our students to learn, grow, and thrive.

Thank you for treating our Tiger team and helping us start the year with full cups and big smiles! 🐯☕️

⚖️🐯 Choices have consequences — and our 6th graders are learning why!

Yesterday and today, SRO Officer Florio and Supervisor of Counseling and Assessment Kim Cunningham teamed up to visit our 6th grade Career Investigations classes for “Your Choices, Your Future.”

Students got a chance to learn about Virginia law, talk through real-life situations, ask questions, and think about something pretty important: the choices we make today can impact what happens tomorrow.

It was a great opportunity to have honest conversations about laws, consequences, decision-making, and how to handle situations they may face as they get older.

Huge thanks to Officer Florio and Ms. Cunningham for making these conversations engaging, relevant, and meaningful for our Tigers! 💛🐯

Because knowing the law is important — but knowing how to make good choices when it counts is even better.

📚 Book clubs are better in the courtyard!
On Friday, Ms. Schneider’s 6th grade English students took their learning outside for their first book club discussions of Jason Reynolds’s Ghost - and our beautiful courtyard made the perfect classroom!

But these weren’t just ordinary book talks. Students used Bloom’s Taxonomy to create their own challenging questions for one another, asking classmates to apply prior knowledge, analyze the plot, evaluate character choices, and even create new scenes and situations. 🧠💭

The result? Lots of thoughtful conversations, different perspectives, and students learning from one another!

Activities like this are a great reminder that learning doesn’t always have to happen from behind a desk. Giving students opportunities to talk, question, create, and share helps bring both the book - and their thinking - to life. 📖✨

Mrs. Bane’s English classes took a trip to the library on Friday to check out some new books and spend Fluency Friday reading! 📚🐯

We even had a special guest when Mr. Ventura stopped by to read with our WGMS Tigers! 🧡🖤

Building stronger readers one Friday at a time. 📖

🫧 Bubbles + Science = Learning in Action! 🧪

Ms. Hein’s 8th grade Physical Science students put their laboratory skills to the test with a question worth investigating: Which brand of dish soap makes the best bubble solution? 🫧🔬

Students practiced important science skills while testing, observing, comparing results, and gathering evidence - all while having a little fun along the way!

At Walker-Grant, our teachers know that some of the best learning happens when students get to do the science, not just read about it. Hands-on activities spark curiosity, build confidence, and help students connect what they’re learning in the classroom to the world around them.

Who knew a bottle of dish soap could make such a great science lesson? 🫧💡
