🗣 LISTEN: A heartfelt conversation as our chapter comes to a close. 💙❤️💛

On Friday, President Janel Skipwith Donohue reflected on her upcoming retirement and the difficult decision for RUW to close after 86 years of service, in her final interview with Ted Schubel. She shared the lasting impact RUW has had on the region, and the lives changed through the power of community.

As this chapter nears the end, we stand united in gratitude for 86 years of meaningful change.

On Tuesday, we gathered with our closest donors, partners, volunteers, council members, and friends to commemorate the incredible impact we made by mobilizing the caring power of our community.

Thank you, fredericksburg.com, for joining us and documenting this bittersweet moment in time. 💙❤️💛

📣 Today at the United Way of Virginia Annual Meeting, Sarah Walsh presented the 2025 ALICE Report and Overview on behalf of Rappahannock United Way.

The report, developed by United For ALICE in partnership with United Ways across Virginia, reveals a startling reality:

📊 In 2023:

☑️ 10% of Virginia’s 3.4 million households (351,398) lived below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)

☑️ Another 28% (956,236) were ALICE households - earning above the FPL but still struggling to afford basic necessities

☑️ Together, that’s 39% of households living below the ALICE Threshold

We urge our partners and supporters to continue fighting for ALICE by working toward solutions for every hardworking family in our community.

Paying it forward through partnerships! 💪

Our commitment to building a strong community through education, financial stability, and health remains at the heart of everything we do. This week, we've put that mission into action by visiting our partner organizations and delivering much-needed supplies to support local families and individuals.

From backpacks and notebooks to toothbrushes and hygiene items, these donations are helping students return to school with confidence and families care for their health with dignity. We will continue to create opportunities to spread hope and kindness, no matter how big or small, until the very end.

ALICE keeps our economy running but still can’t afford the basics.

Based on the latest ALICE report, in 2023, 13 of the 20 most common jobs in Virginia paid less than $20/hour – which is less than $40,000 a year if full-time.

So, it’s no surprise that 33% of workers in these 20 jobs couldn’t make ends meet.

Let’s make sure hard work is enough. Dig into The in Virginia: UnitedForALICE.org/Virginia.

Congratulations to the Project SEARCH Class of 2025! 🎉

On Tuesday, May 20th, we celebrated the graduation of seven incredible interns from the Mary Washington Healthcare Project SEARCH program! 🎓

This collaborative effort, led by RSVP, Inc., Stafford County Public Schools, and Mary Washington Healthcare, equips young adults with disabilities with real-world job skills and experience to prepare them for meaningful employment.

During the ceremony, each intern shared personal stories and photos from their internship at Mary Washington Hospital, making it a truly touching and memorable day of celebration. 💙

RUW was proud to support their journey by delivering our Prosper Students financial literacy program throughout the year. From budgeting and using credit to staying safe online, these interns showed enthusiasm and a real drive to learn. We can’t wait to see where their futures lead!

Last Thursday, our friends at University of Mary Washington hosted “What I Can Do Now: A Mini Job Conference for Job Seekers.”

Recognizing the challenges of today’s job market, UMW faculty created this event to offer meaningful resources and support, not just for students, but for anyone exploring new employment opportunities, regardless of their background or situation.

A key highlight of the event was the Community Resources to Use Now panel, where local leaders shared actionable ways to tap into support networks available across the Fredericksburg region.

Rappahannock United Way President Janel Donohue joined this conversation, spotlighting Prosper Financial Assistance, Ride United, and additional Prosper Services designed to aid job seekers, especially those who qualify as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed).

Through these offerings, Rappahannock United Way helps individuals manage immediate financial needs while building long-term stability - critical support for those working hard to get back on their feet.

This panel reminded attendees that while the job search journey may feel isolating, resources and caring organizations are ready to walk alongside them every step of the way. 💙❤💛
