15 - 17 September Brook Trout Fishing in WV

Spruce K**b Lake (near Riverton, WV) Camping and Fishing Get-Away
Campground: Spruce K**b Lake (self-reserved, plenty of camp slots open ATM) From what I've read it may be best with tents or small campers. Dirt roads / national forest driving so I'm not sure about a large fifth wheel on those.
Fishing ideas: Seneca Creek Trail, Otter Creek Trail / wilderness and tribs... flexible on times / meetups or not. Have a few others mapped out if these fail.
Meals: Casual dinners,.. Perhaps potluck dinners for Friday / Saturday night. Otherwise BYOF.
Cost: I think it's $40 / $64 for the two nights per campsite depending on site.

There is a small 25 acre lake that is stocked, at the camp but this time of year who knows if anything is left there. Will be at 4000 feet, so expect cold nights. It will be game on, withstanding harsh thunderstorms that weekend. Should be good for those into night sky photography if it's clear.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Based on several requests, we will move the location of Aug 17th, Thursday's fishing day from Seven Bends State Park (Woodstock) to the Rappahannock River Campground (33017 River Mill Rd, Richardsville, VA 22736).

While not as scenic as 7 Bends, it's an hour closer to Fredericksburg and offers similar fishing.

The cost will be $8 per person, which covers your entrance fee, rental of the campsite / pic-nic area, and lunch (provided by Generally Won't Make You Sick Caterers).

If you'd like to attend, please RSVP to this email or to Lars ([email protected]) by Tuesday night so we have an accurate head count.

We'll send out a confirmation email on Wednesday with details, but expect a show time of around 9:00, lunch between 1:00 and 1:30, and to shut down around 5:00 (later if the fishing is good). Forecast calls for some rain on Tuesday, but the river should clear long before Thursday morning.

Thanks,

Craig Conover

Below is the info on joining Falmouth Flats Fly Fishers and Fly Fishers International. If you have not already Joined or renewed your membership please do so. The Falmouth Flats Fly Fishers currently has no local dues requirement, but as a Charter Club of Fly Fishers International (FFI), we must require that all members become a member of FFI to participate in Falmouth Flats Fly Fishers events. FFI has annual dues. In return for ensuring that all our club members are FFI members, our club receives benefits from FFI. Among these benefits are legal advice from FFI attorneys, and a reduced rate in our club's liability insurance. We also fall under FFI's 501 (c) (3) status, we are included in FFI's group tax returns, and we don't have to pay any club fees. We all benefit greatly from your membership in FFI, and to maintain our Charter Club status, all of our members must join.

There are other benefits available to the club, and to individual FFI members. To see these benefits, please explore the FFI website. I have provided a link below to FFI membership information. If you scroll down the linked page there is link to "Join FFI" (the lady wading a stream) that will lead you to on-line membership registration. Click "Come Join Us Today" to start the online membership process. Please, ENSURE that you identify "Falmouth Flats Fly Fishers" as your club affiliation! It is important for the club to receive certain benefits. Failure to identify proper club affiliation also makes it very difficult to reconcile our Falmouth Flats Fly Fishers membership roles with the FFI membership roles to ensure Charter Club status. Please note: "Fredericksburg Fly Fishers" is a different FFI Club in Fredericksburg, TX. Please do not affiliate yourself with them, pick FALMOUTH FLATS FLY FISHERS!

Fellow fly fishers,
THe Shad are here! Welcome spring! Yesterday the first shad of the season was reported on the Potomac River in DC. After hearing that report today I went downtown and witnessed hickory shad caught at City Dock. I also stopped by the Historic port of Falmouth park and talke to one of the parks and Rec employees. Currently the park is still on winter hours closing at 5:30pm till 12 March when it moves to 8am to 8pm. Stafford Parks and Rec have started selling fishing passes at the Rowser building on Rt1 and online. These passes allow you to enter the park before opening and stay past closing for fishing 5am to 10pm.

Catalog - Stafford Parks, Recreation, Facilities & Tourism (rec1.com) Select Fishing pass under the Passes heading.

Fellow Fly Fishers,
Small change in plans for Saturday morning. I will go to Old Mill Park and get our trash bags and waiver forms. The club will meet at the stairs to Ficklen Island at 9am Saturday morning. Ficklen Island is just upstream of Rt 1 on the Fredericksburg side of the Rappahannock. As for an address use the Fredericksburg Church of Christ 336 Riverside Dr, this is across the street from Ficklen Island.
After the cleanup activities we will go to Old Mill park for a catered BBQ lunch from Dickey's.

Several of you have asked what to bring. I would recommend gloves and if you have a reach tool (aka litter getter) to bring it.
Attached is a map of the cleanup sites for reference.

See you Saturday morning at Ficklen Island.

Fellow Fly Fishers,
Please join me Saturday 22 Oct at Old Mill Park 9-noon. I have signed up for Falmouth Flats Fly Fishers to pick up trash on and around Ficklen Island just upstream of the RT 1 bridge over the Rappahannock. After the cleanup we can stay for a free BBQ lunch catered from Dickey's BBQ at Old Mill park. If you want to park in the Old Mill park let the gate attendant know you are there for the river cleanup, otherwise there is up to a $10 fee to park at Old Mill Park for non -residents of Fredericksburg. This is a great opportunity for us to help with conservation and taking care of our local river. Friends of the Rappahannock is hoping to have 200 volunteers. I believe we can have at least 10 from FFFF.
Please RSVP to me if you plan to attend.

What are your ideas for future club presentations?

Upcoming events:

FFFF Fishing/camping trip Rappahannock River Campground Richardville, VA 19 -21st of Aug. We have camping spots reserved and the camping spot location fee is $11 per person per night. If they want to come and just fish for the day, the campground fee is $5 per day. There will be an
additional food cost I will coordinate meal planning with those attending at the Tuesday meeting and let people know Wed what the final plans are. A number of people have expressed interest in doing the Kelly's Ford to the Campground float trip on Saturday, the current water levels look good for that, I would like to know how many people that are not camping would like to do that. Hi

RE: Hickory Shad Creel Recommendations

I am conerned that the Hickory shad will be overfished due to no creel limits by VMRC. If you concur please send a email to email list below.

Was hoping to make the group float but a conflict came up. Does anyone have recommendations on a good sit on top kayak for fly fishing on the Rappahannock? I've got a couple of the hybrid sit inside kayaks that are nice for fly fishing but am looking into a sit on top that is stable but not crazy heavy. I know the Mayfly is designed for fly fishing but it's a pretty big, heavy boat. Thanks!
