The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office is seeking assistance from the public in identifying a bicyclist involved in a hit-and-run crash that occurred in the Town of Fredonia.

On Tuesday, 06-02-26, at approximately 8:35am, a bicyclist was struck by a silver Ford Escape bearing Illinois registration plates while traveling westbound on Fredonia Kohler Road near the intersection of County Highway H. The driver of the suspect vehicle was later located and arrested on other charges.

According to a witness who observed the crash, the bicyclist left the scene on foot prior to law enforcement's arrival and has not been identified or located. Deputies are attempting to contact the bicyclist to determine their condition and obtain information regarding the incident.

The bicyclist is described as:

• White male
• Operating what is believed to have been an eBike
• Bicycle sustained significant damage to the rear wheel from of the crash

If you were the bicyclist involved in this incident, or if you know someone matching this description whose bicycle recently sustained significant rear wheel damage, please contact the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office at (262) 284-7172, and reference incident #26-12162.

Your assistance is appreciated as Deputies work to identify, check the welfare, and speak with the bicyclist involved.

This is the time of year we start getting well meaning calls about "abandoned" deer fawn. I get it. There is just something about them, all alone and curled up that just makes you want to help them.

Take a picture, enjoy the moment, and leave them alone. This is a natural and normal part of the fawning process. Don't try to feed them, or rescue them. If there are visible injuries, or unnatural behavior such as laying with limbs extended or running around crying for more than a hour, then a call to law enforcement to check it out is probably warranted. Otherwise, no need to call us.

With the weather getting nicer, I thought I would post a simple reminder about sharing the road with bicycles.

Siren testing is complete. If you did not hear a siren do not be alarmed. The test was to see if it could be activated remotely, as opposed to manual activation by our full time fire department staff.

Thank you

Due to the number of conflicting reports from village residents on if they heard the overnight tornado sirens earlier in the week, we are checking the system to confirm it's operating as intended. We have already confirmed that the signal to the tower was activated by the Ozaukee County dispatch center. We have gotten conflicting reports from people that claim to have heard the siren, and from those that haven't. Again we are checking just to make sure.

This, though, is a good opportunity to talk about exactly what purpose these sirens are designed for. According to the National Weather Service outdoor warning system (OWS) sirens, are activated when storms may produce tornadoes, large hail, or strong winds (In Wisconsin only for tornadoes). These sirens are designed to alert people who are outside, not those inside buildings.

Respectfully, if you are using these sirens as your sole warning system for severe weather, you are doing it wrong. I would strongly recommend for indoor protection that you employ either a weather radio and/or a phone APP. And make sure that you keep the device near the area where you are sleep. This last warning came in the middle of the night.

The National Weather Service is expecting another round of potentially severe storms tonight. Stay vigilant, and stay safe Fredonia.

With the Storms that went through overnight, I thought a few reminders on storm safety would be appropriate. One thing to stress, given the timing of these storms in the middle of the night, make sure you have some notification system enabled for you to receive weather alerts. This could be a weather radio, or your cellular phone. If you are relying on your phone, make sure alerts are enabled and set to highest volume. Keep your alert system close to where you sleep. It does you little good downstairs or in the basement.

Fraud alert. Once again we are looking into a fraud complaint where residents of our village are receiving fraudulent request for permit fees from subjects claiming to be the Village of Fredonia. These fraudulent emails have every appearance of being from the village, and even include the actual names of village staff to appear more legitimate.

If you receive a request for permit fees from the village, either by email, phone, or regular mail, that you were not already expecting based upon your in person discussions with the village, assume it is fraudulent and delete or destroy it.

Please call Village Hall at (262) 692-9125 and confirm before making any payments or providing any information for any unsolicited requests for money from someone claiming to represent the village.

The Fredonia Marshal’s Office is pleased to report that Deputy Marshal Sam McCloud has agreed to come out of retirement to provide his services to us. Sam McCloud comes to us from originally from Taos, New Mexico, where he served as a Deputy Marshal.

Although Deputy Marshal McCloud hung up his spurs in 1977, we believe he still brings a range of skills to our office, including the ability to do horseback patrols and his trademark use of a lasso to capture fleeing suspects. He does possess some familiarity with the northern climates, as his last posting was on loan to the New York Police Department as an investigator, where his horseback riding skills were put to great use getting around congested New York traffic.

Today it was my pleasure to be invited by the Fredonia Fire Department and Daisy Scout Troop 8661 to assist in a public safety presentation for the scouts. We talked about 911, family safety plans, and what to do in emergencies. Of course there was plenty of time to show the squad, fire trucks, and some of the equipment.
