Graduation season is here 🎓

We asked our Firefighters what year they graduated high school, then paired it with one of the biggest songs from that year. Let’s just say some of these songs still hold up… and some definitely show their age.

Hey, Chief, what was Watsonville Fire like in the 90s?

Back when paper maps were the GPS, turnout gear weighed twice as much, and calls came in over the radio with nothing but an address and instinct. No smartphones. No apps. Just experience, teamwork, and a whole lot of grit.

Some things have changed… but the commitment to this community hasn’t.

Jefe, ¿cómo era Watsonville Fire en los años 90?

Cuando los mapas de papel eran el GPS, el equipo de bomberos pesaba el doble y las llamadas llegaban por radio con nada más que una dirección y el instinto. No había celulares inteligentes. No había apps. Sólo experiencia, trabajo en equipo y muchísimas ganas de servir.

Algunas cosas han cambiado… pero el compromiso con esta comunidad sigue igual de fuerte.

Firefighter Appreciation Day is today, and we’re taking a moment to recognize the dedicated men and women of the Watsonville Fire Department.

Every day, our Firefighters show up ready to serve, protect, and respond when our community needs them most. From emergency calls to fire prevention and public education, their work often happens behind the scenes but makes a real difference in keeping Watsonville safe.

While today is a chance to say thank you, we appreciate their commitment and service every single day of the year!

Hoy es el Día de Agradecimiento a los Bomberos y queremos tomarnos un momento para reconocer a los hombres y mujeres dedicados del Departamento de Bomberos de Watsonville.

Todos los días, nuestros Bomberos llegan listos para servir, proteger y responder cuando nuestra comunidad más los necesita. Desde atender emergencias hasta la prevención de incendios y la educación del público, gran parte de su trabajo se realiza tras bastidores, pero hace una gran diferencia para mantener a Watsonville seguro.

Aunque hoy es un día para dar gracias, valoramos su compromiso y servicio todos y cada uno de los días del año.

A hot car can turn deadly faster than you think.

Today is National Heatstroke Prevention Day, and we’re sharing this reminder to help keep kids safe as temperatures start to rise.

In just 10 minutes, the temperature inside can rise by 20°F. Within 30 minutes, it can be up to 50°F hotter than outside, and cracking the windows does not make a meaningful difference. Children are especially at risk. Their bodies heat up 3 to 5 times faster than adults. Heatstroke can begin at 104°F, and death can occur at 107°F. It only takes minutes for a situation to become life-threatening.

Help prevent a tragedy by always checking the back seat before you walk away.

Un carro caliente puede volverse mortal más rápido de lo que imaginas.

Hoy es el Día Nacional de Prevención del Golpe de Calor, y queremos compartir este recordatorio para ayudar a mantener a los niños seguros ahora que empiezan a subir las temperaturas.

En tan sólo 10 minutos, la temperatura dentro de un carro puede subir 20 °F. En 30 minutos, puede estar hasta 50 °F más caliente que afuera y dejar las ventanas un poco abiertas no hace una diferencia significativa. Los niños están en mayor riesgo, ya que sus cuerpos se calientan entre 3 y 5 veces más rápido que los de un adulto. El golpe de calor puede comenzar a los 104 °F y la muerte puede ocurrir a los 107 °F. Sólo toma unos minutos para que la situación se vuelva peligrosa.

All clear following smoke investigation.

Our Fire crews from Stations 1 and 2 responded to reports of smoke inside a business on the 1800 block of Freedom Boulevard shortly before 1PM today. Employees and patrons were evacuated as a precaution while our crews investigated.

Turns out that the smoke was coming from an HVAC unit on the roof. Our Firefighters checked for any signs of fire and made sure it was safe for everyone to return to the building. Neighboring fire agencies also stepped in to help respond to calls in our City while crews were tied up on this incident.

If you notice smoke inside a building, treat it as a potential emergency and get out right away. Call 911 once you’re in a safe location.

Situación bajo control tras investigación por humo.

Nuestros Bomberos de las Estaciones 1 y 2 respondieron poco antes de la 1PM a reportes de humo en un negocio ubicado en la cuadra 1800 de Freedom Boulevard. Por precaución, se evacuó a empleados y clientes mientras nuestros equipos revisaban la situación.

Resulta que el humo provenía de una unidad de climatización (HVAC) ubicada en el techo. Nuestros Bomberos verificaron que no hubiera señales de fuego y se aseguraron de que fuera seguro para que todos pudieran regresar al edificio. También contamos con el apoyo de las agencias de bomberos vecinas, que atendieron otras llamadas en la Ciudad mientras nuestros equipos estaban ocupados en este incidente.

Si notas humo dentro de un edificio, trátalo como una posible emergencia y sal de inmediato. Llama al 911 una vez que estés en un lugar seguro.

Promoted, proud, and ready to serve!

Please join us in congratulating Fire Captain Aaron Whiting and Fire Engineer Adrian Chairez on their recent promotions. Both were presented with their new shields by Fire Chief Schaefer, marking an important milestone in their careers and continued service to our community.

Aaron has been with the department since 2014, previously serving as a Fire Engineer, and now steps into the role of Fire Captain. Adrian has served with WFD since 2021 as a Firefighter and has been promoted to Fire Engineer, where he will continue supporting frontline operations.

These promotions reflect years of hard work, training, and commitment to public safety.

Congratulations to both!

¡Ascendidos, orgullosos y listos para servir!

Acompáñenos a felicitar al Capitán de Bomberos Aaron Whiting y al Ingeniero de Bomberos Adrian Chairez por sus recientes ascensos. Ambos recibieron sus nuevos escudos de manos del Jefe de Bomberos Schaefer, lo que marca un momento importante en sus carreras y en su servicio continuo a nuestra comunidad.

Aaron ha formado parte del departamento desde 2014, primero como Ingeniero de Bomberos y ahora como Capitán. Adrian ha estado con WFD desde 2021 como Bombero y ha sido ascendido a Ingeniero de Bomberos, donde continuará apoyando las operaciones en primera línea.

Estos ascensos reflejan años de esfuerzo, capacitación y compromiso con la seguridad pública.

At the Watsonville Fire Department, there are real opportunities to grow.

Fire Engineer Brian Navarro joined the department as a Paramedic, completed the Santa Cruz County Regional Fire Academy after being hired, and gained hands-on experience responding to structure fires, wildland incidents, vehicle accidents, and medical calls. With the support and mentorship of his team, he was promoted to Fire Engineer after a few years.

Here at the Watsonville Fire Department, we all work together to help the next generation learn the job and advance their careers.

We’re now accepting applications for the anticipated 2026 Santa Cruz County Regional Fire Academy, where certified Paramedics will train to become career Firefighters. Experienced Firefighters looking to serve a diverse community as part of a skilled, family-driven department are encouraged to apply for a lateral position today at watsonville.gov

Administrative fire staff from across the county stepped into the boots of our Firefighters for a hands-on training experience this week!

From learning equipment and safety procedures to experiencing some of the physical and technical demands firsthand, this training helps our admin teams better understand what Firefighters face every day. This matters because a strong emergency response takes a full team. When admin staff understand field operations, they can better support the work that keeps our community safe.

Thank you to our Watsonville Firefighters for sharing their time, expertise, and experience, and to our regional fire admin partners for their commitment to learning and collaboration.

Personal administrativo de bomberos de todo el condado tuvo la oportunidad de ponerse en el lugar de nuestros Bomberos durante una capacitación práctica esta semana.

Desde aprender sobre el equipo y los procedimientos de seguridad hasta experimentar de primera mano algunas de las exigencias físicas y técnicas, esta capacitación ayuda a nuestros equipos administrativos a entender mejor lo que enfrentan los Bomberos todos los días. Esto es importante porque una respuesta de emergencia sólida requiere de todo un equipo. Cuando el personal administrativo comprende las operaciones en campo, puede apoyar mejor el trabajo que mantiene segura a nuestra comunidad.

Gracias a nuestros Bomberos de Watsonville por compartir su tiempo, experiencia y conocimientos, y a nuestros colegas administrativos regionales por su compromiso con el aprendizaje y la colaboración.
