We are back with another edition of Monmouth County Then and Now! Today we are highlighting The Old Mill in Allentown. The town developed around its mill when it was built by Nathan Allen in the early 1700's which was powered by a waterwheel. This location was specifically selected because Doctors Creek was able to provide the flow of energy needed to give power to the waterwheel. As the farms in the area grew, so did the need for blacksmith shops, wheelwrights, carriage makers, chair makers, shoemakers, seamstresses and tailors. The Old Mill is a historical landmark that reflects the evolution of local trade, crafts, and way of life in Monmouth County. Stay tuned as we continue to uncover the transformations of Monmouth County with Then and Now!
Welcome to the first edition of Monmouth County Then and Now! We're kicking off the series with the iconic Parker Homestead, the oldest structure in Monmouth County. This historic home has been continuously lived in by one family for over 300 years, from 1665 to 1996, when it was deeded to Little Silver. Originally purchased by Quaker brothers Peter and Joseph Parker, the property offers a rare glimpse into the region's early history. With deposits spanning three centuries, it’s a treasure trove of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Explore the homestead’s stunning grounds, barns, and house at their weekly Open House, every Sunday from 1 pm to 4 pm. Stay tuned as we continue to uncover the transformations of Monmouth County with Then and Now!
