If you know Billy Anderson I don't have to tell you what a great person he is and the battles with cancer that he has been waging for the last several years.

This Monday, September 11th, Billy is having major surgery for throat cancer, that being his 23rd procedure/surgery as he battles cancer yet again. As you can imagine, insurance does not begin to cover co-pays, deductibles, or a wide array of medications. And out-of-pocket expenses for travel to and from doctors and Mt. Sinai continue to add-up.

Your donation, in any amount, will help reduce these financial burdens and allow Billy to focus on healing and re-gaining his strength.

Thank you in advance for answering this call of support!

Olde Freehold Day at the Pond and the Space Krickets tonight at the Legion!

08/04/2023

At the American Legion Post 54 August meeting Commander Vince Bruno presented Justin Ponquinette with a certificate "In recognition and sincere appreciation of outstanding service and assistance which contributed to the advancement of The American Legion programs and activities dedicated to God and Country."

As one of the requirements for achieving his black belt in Karate Justin had to perform an act of community service. Because of his respect for veterans Justin chose to have a fundraiser for American Legion Post 54 in honor of his grandfather, a veteran of the Vietnam war. Justin was able to raise over $3,200 for our post!

Fourteen year old Justin, who has trained in the martial arts for nine years, achieved his 1st degree black belt at Art Beins Karate in Freehold on July 22, 2023. Justin is considering a career in the military will be entering the 9th grade and is a member of the Colts Neck High School ROTC.

Congratulations Justin, on achieving your black belt and thank you for supporting the veterans of American Legion Post 54!

Thank you for supporting the Veterans!

Recently one of our members was the recipient of a grant from The Home Depot Foundation. Team Depot, Home Depot’s associate volunteer force, did some general backyard landscaping work at a veteran’s home in Freehold Borough.

As you may know, we were the recipient of a $1,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation during their Operation Surprise campaign in December of 2021. While long gone, that money provided us with several benefits to help a few compromised veteran members and to complete a few needed improvements to our facility on Main Street.

I trust we all support such a veteran-centered organization that has and continues to support the veterans in all communities in America.

FREEHOLD BOOK SIGNING EVENT!

BASEBALL IS IN MY DNA - A History of Baseball in Freehold, New Jersey 1857-1973 Freehold’s own Glenn Cashion has written a book about the history of baseball in Freehold and he’ll be reading selected passages and signing copies right here in town!

Join your friends on Friday, January 20, 2023, 5:00 pm at Freehold American Legion Post 54, located at 62 West Main Street (across from the fire house) for an evening of Freehold baseball.

If you already have a copy of the book, great! Glenn will be happy to personalize your copy. If you don’t have the book, no worries, there will be copies available to purchase.

Part history book, part memoir, Baseball Is in My DNA traces the history of baseball in Freehold, New Jersey-and the intertwined story of the Cashion family. In addition to a broad look at the growth of baseball throughout the region, Cashion shares intimate insights, including terrific stories about his brother, “Mr. Baseball of Freehold.” David “Dem” Cashion. Photographs, newspaper articles, and players’ recollections bring to life more than 100 years of the “baseball stronghold” in the Garden State, including early rules, team rosters, tryout tales, and eccentric ball players.

Members and friends, this Sunday, October 30th, Post 54 will open at noon, one hour earlier than normal.

On that day the Borough of Freehold will be hosting their annual Spooktacular Parade and Costume Contest. The parade will start at 1:00 pm and travel up Main Street, right past Post 54!

Bring your folding chairs and watch the parade in front of the post where you'll be close to a bathroom or a room to warm up in if needed.

So far this year Freehold's Halloween Spooktacular events have exceeded all expectations, so the parade should be a great one!

Don't forget, Main Street will be closed from Rt. 33 to South Street, so come early or use the back streets to get to the post.

See you at the parade on Sunday!

Post 54 salutes you!

We had a great deal of excitement today!

Our esteemed Chairman, Alice McCobb was honored by the NJ State Senate for 34 years as chairman of the Freehold Memorial Day Parade Committee. Alice has served on the committee for more than 40 years. She is pictured here with the Senate Majority Leader M. Theresa Cruz, Senator Vin Gopal, Alice McCobb, Senate President Nicholas P. Scutari, and Senate Minority Leader Steven V. Oroho.

We would like to extend our CONGRATULATIONS to Alice for all of her work and dedication to our town for the parade each year and her tireless efforts to honor our fallen.

The Senate Resolution, by Senator Gopal, reads as follows:

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of New Jersey is pleased to saluteAlice McCobb, a highly esteemed resident of the Borough of Freehold, Monmouth County, in recognition of the immeasurable contributions she has made to the community as the eminent Chair of the Freehold Memorial Day Parade, a role she has held with distinction since 1988; and,

WHEREAS, As Chair of one of the oldest Memorial Day Parades in the country, Alice McCobb has been a torchbearer of tradition, enthusiastically planning an extravaganza which averages seventy marching units, including veterans organizations, local dignitaries, youth groups, fire and rescue units, and which has hosted New Jersey Governors Christine Whitman and Phil Murphy; and,

WHEREAS, An exemplary leader, she has persevered through adverse weather conditions and even found a way to stage the event safely in 2020, within the COVID-19 restrictions, thus earning the admiration and respect of all who know of her selfless deeds; and,

WHEREAS, Throughout her many years at the helm, Alice McCobb has ensured that the Freehold Memorial Day Parade remains true to its purpose of honoring our fallen heroes, and to that end, she has continued the ritual of sending a flag-draped caisson ahead of the procession, a solemn tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice; and,

WHEREAS, Alice McCobb has demonstrated an exemplary measure of civic-mindedness and, in so doing, provided a model of faithful commitment to public service worthy of emulation; and,

WHEREAS, It is altogether fitting and proper for the members of this House to pause in their deliberations to acknowledge Alice McCobb and praise her as an individual of strong character and uncommon determination; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:
That this House hereby commends Alice McCobb, pays tribute to her meritorious efforts in behalf of the citizenry of this State, and extends to her sincere best wishes for the continued success in all her future endeavors; and

Be It Further Resolved, That a duly authenticated copy of this resolution, signed by the President and attested by the Secretary, be transmitted to Alice McCobb.

This morning at 5:11am the Freehold Fire Department was dispatched to the Freehold American Legion - Monmouth Post 54 for a reported fire in the rear of the building. Dear Post 54 Comrades,

My name is Warren Hunt. I live in Michigan, and am a life member of both the VFW and the VVA (Chapter 35, Toledo, Ohio). I am also a retired active duty Army E-7, beginning with service in Vietnam in 68-69 with the First Infantry Division.

In 2018 I published a memoir, “Reflections on the Vietnam War: A Fifty-Year Journey,” an overview of what the Vietnam Era looked like to me. It covers the span of time from when I was in high school, through my Army service in Nam, culminating with my attendance at the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. in 1982. The book is available at amazon.com in paperback as well as Kindle format. A link to my book’s website is attached here: www.facebook.com/rvw50.

This memoir has been included by Bowling Green State University and Lourdes University as part of the reading list for their classes on the Vietnam War. In addition, it has received positive reviews from well-known literary publications, including Manhattan Book Review, Publishers Weekly/Book Life, and the VVA Veteran: Books in Review (Henry Zeybel). In April of 2018 an excerpt from my book appeared in a special commemorative issue of USA Today: “Echoes from Vietnam.”

“Reflections on the Vietnam War: A Fifty-Year Journey” has been well-received by readers; including Vietnam veterans and their family members. Many non-veterans, especially younger people, have also found it enlightening as an aid to gaining a broader perspective on the Vietnam War era.

I am now in the process of sharing my work with local veterans organizations; not to make money, but because I have been told I should share it by so many people who find it an inspiring and informative read.

Best wishes to your post members for a safe and pleasant summer.

Sincerely,
Warren Hunt
