Clearing out the yard before the season changes? 🍂🧤

Late August often brings dry, hot conditions to New Jersey, making yard waste and dry brush a major fire hazard. The Fire Marshal’s Office recommends a quick end-of-summer safety cleanup around your property.

Take these steps to protect your home's exterior:
• Clear the Perimeter: Remove dead plants, dry leaves, and pine needles from within 5 feet of your home's foundation and under decks.
• Store Mulch Safely: Keep organic mulch away from vinyl siding and wooden stairs. Dry mulch can easily ignite from a stray spark or discarded smoking material.
• Proper Disposal: Check local municipal rules for disposing of yard waste. Never burn brush or trash in your yard.

With all the beach towels, sports uniforms, and summer clothes piling up, your laundry room is working overtime this month! 👕🧺

Did you know that clothes dryers cause thousands of house fires every year, and the leading cause is a failure to clean them? The Fire Marshal’s Office reminds you that lint is highly flammable.
Keep your laundry routine safe with these maintenance tips:

• Clean the Filter: Clean the lint trap screen before or after every single load of laundry.
• Check the Vent Pipe: At least once a year, inspect the plastic or metal ductwork behind the dryer. Clear out any clogged lint buildup and replace flexible plastic hoses with rigid metal ducting.
• Look Outside: Walk outside while the dryer is running to ensure the exterior exhaust vent flap opens completely and is not blocked by bird nests or overgrown bushes.
• Never Leave It Running: Do not leave your home or go to sleep while the clothes dryer is operating.

Late summer often brings severe weather, tropical tracking systems, and sudden power outages to our area. ⛈️🔌

If you rely on a portable generator to keep your lights and AC running this month, the Fire Marshal’s Office reminds you that safety must come first. Carbon monoxide (CO) from generators is an invisible killer.

Never cut corners with these generator rules:
• Always Outdoors: Never run a generator inside a home, garage, basement, or crawlspace—even if windows are open.
• Distance Matters: Keep the generator at least 20 feet away from all open windows, doors, and vents to prevent exhaust from drifting inside.
• Cool Before Refueling: Turn the generator off and let it cool completely before adding fuel. Splashing gas on a hot engine can cause an instant explosion.
• CO Alarms: Ensure you have working carbon monoxide alarms installed on every level of your home.
