Today we kicked off our Signs of Hope program with The Freehold Borough YMCA Community Center! Mike Ciccotello, children’s book author-Illustrator, joined us for a reading of his new book “Beach Toys vs. School Supplies” and led the group through some fun drawing activities. Yesterday we also dropped off art supplies and packets of summer arts activities for the students! We’re excited to share more about the program throughout the summer and can’t wait to start the program with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Red Bank and Asbury Park next week. Well, we made it!!!

Even through the pandemic, we got an opportunity to grow food for our family, friends and the community.

To date, we gave 365 pounds of food from three PAR beds.

The food was delivered to Open Door, Marguerita Jane Dentino Freehold Area Open Door Casa Freehold and Freehold Borough YMCA Community Center The Freehold Borough YMCA Community Center on Center Street.

Thanks to Geri, Jani, Bob and Ellen for planting and maintaining the beds. A special thanks to Carolyn who harvested about 90% of the food.

This year we were able to get a number of projects done. Those included pruning the tree in the back field (thanks to DPW), removing the trees in the garden (again DPW), repairing the water lines (thanks to Gary/Geri), 2 new hose reels (put together and repaired by Gary/Geri) and donated by NCTH, a new shed (put together by Tony, Jan, DPW) and donated by NCTH.

The year possessed some problems with health issues and job loss but we came together as a community. We shared the work and offered a shoulder for listening, from a distance. Gardeners like Dick stepped up and mowed the whole season for us. Several football players and the NHS from Freehold High School offered assistance spreading wood chips last spring.

This weekend Barbara, Geri, Gary, Larry, Linda (NCTH), Jani, Jeanne, Karen, Richard, Dick, Eileen, Julie and Beth spread compost, raked leaves, cleaned and organized the sheds, cut down all perennials and general cleanup. Beth will be back raking the leaves in a few weeks.

***The 2021 season opened Nov 1. Gardeners wishing to come back next year received an application at the work days. It will be posted at the Boro website starting Dec 1 for Boro residents. ***

Please reach out with your gardening questions.
