12/03/2023

Esquire Magazine named Lita in Aberdeen one of the 50 "Best New Restaurants in America" for 2023!

"The hearth at Lita sees constant tending with a vigorously waved fan, the feeding of charcoal with a shovel, the movement of chicken and octopus. It is the thing you least expect to see inside a strip mall in central Jersey next to an old bowling alley, but then again, no one expected that a destination-worthy Iberian restaurant would be here. Many things come from this hearth, but the paella beckons. The fire gives it criminally generous amounts of socarrat, the smoky, crunchy, flavor-packed bits of rice that, to many, are the primary reason for the dish’s existence."

"But there is depth to Neilly Robinson and chef David Viana’s menu beyond the hearth. Lightly fried pieces of Manchego will make you rethink how cheese should be fried. The tuna tartare, dressed in ajo blanco and jalapeño, topped with roasted almonds, wrapped in a shiso leaf, and served atop a bed of ice? One of the most sublime bites you’ll have this year. The drinks, from Ricardo Rodriguez, have just enough of a culinary touch to swerve along with the food. A boulevardier gets coconut oil; the Spanish martini, a bit of piparra brine and saffron oil. By night’s end, as you step out into the parking lot, you half expect the mosaic sidewalks of Lisbon."
— Keith Sintumuang for Esquire

Bring the kids for pictures with Santa at a 19th century schoolhouse!

Photos with Santa Claus, seasonal refreshments, holiday music and more will fill the historic one-room schoolhouse in Colts Neck from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 3 for a Country Christmas at Montrose Schoolhouse.

Bring your own cameras, Santa Claus will take time out from his busy schedule to pose for free photos. A Christmas tree inside the school will be festooned with decorations appropriate to the period.

The historic Montrose School is the last of Colts Neck Township’s six one-room schoolhouses, it is the only one that retains its original architectural profile; sources agree the structure was built before 1820.

This free event is sponsored by the Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee.

Autumn vibes. 🍁🍂

The Historic Village at Allaire was once an iron-producing, factory-town known as the Howell Iron Works, Co. The Village was a self-sufficient community containing a carpentry and pattern making shop, a blacksmith shop, a bakery, a boarding house, a blast furnace, mills to finish iron products, a school, a church, a general store with a post office, and workers’ home. Iron produced at the village was shipped to New York City by wagon and steamship. It was used to produce steam engines parts in a factory also owned by the proprietor, James P. Allaire. The Howell Iron Works, as a community, speaks to the experiences of the economic and social changes of those who experienced early Industrial America. Today the Historic Village at Allaire is an interactive museum where visitors can experience history directly through hands-on activities.

Upcoming Events include:

The Boston Globe "recently hit the trail" aka the official Anthony Bourdain Food Trail in New Jersey, "visiting seven of the 10 in a whirlwind, stomach stretching, two-night, three-day trip."

First stop, Frank's Deli & Restaurant in Asbury Park.

"We suspect that this old-school breakfast and lunch joint hasn’t changed much since it opened in 1960. We found Joe, the owner, behind the counter, working the grill. “The crew was here all day filming,” Joe reminisced. “But we were only on TV for about two minutes!” Still, he admits that the show — and now the official food trail — has brought in business.

Frank’s has named the #4 sandwich after Bourdain. That’s what he ordered, and that’s also what we tried. It’s a classic Jersey sandwich, piled high with ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone, tomatoes, onions, shredded lettuce, and roasted peppers, drizzled with oil and vinegar, and jammed between slices of soft, fresh-baked bread. “Bourdain added mayo and hot peppers,” said Red, who’s been a waitress at Frank’s for 18 years.

A walk around town was in order. Asbury Park, a small seaside community known for its iconic music venues (think: The Stone Pony, Wonder Bar, and Convention Hall), has gone through a massive renaissance, recovering from its down-and-out, gritty past. "It took a perfect storm: the businesses that wouldn’t give up, a great developer who invested wisely, and a fantastic LGBTQ community that moved in, bought houses, and fixed up neighborhoods," said Sylvia Sylvia (that’s really her name), executive director of the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce." The city was bustling when we were there; the streets and waterfront boardwalk, lined with restaurants and shops, were clogged with people."

The late author, celebrity chef, and TV personality grew up in Leonia, N.J., and spent summers on the Jersey Shore. So when the state created a trail to spotlight 10 of his favorite restaurants, we had to check them out.

10/19/2023

The Boardwalk at Asbury Park on the Jersey Shore about 1905.

Founded in 1871 by manufacturer James Bradley, Asbury Park began as a seaside residential resort in a prime waterfront location. Shortly after the city’s inception, a beach boardwalk was constructed, featuring an orchestra pavilion, public changing rooms and a pier extending into the Atlantic Ocean, capitalizing on the opportunity to attract visitors beyond the local region. News of the boardwalk traveled fast and attracted tourists from the surrounding areas. As well as entrepreneurs and entertainers looking to bring their business to town and brand their entertainment to the boardwalk’s growing crowds. As Asbury Park’s popularity increased, the size and offerings of the boardwalk expanded to accommodate higher demand. In the 1920s, the Paramount Theatre and Convention Hall ushered in a new era of music and performing arts that still exists to this day.
