Have you ever noticed when you're not feeling your best mentally, other parts of your life might feel down too?

Our dimensions of wellness are all connected in one way or another. When we think about the tools we use to take care of ourselves, we can sometimes forget that there's more to our wellness than just what we see in the mirror.

What wellness dimension do you feel you need to put more focus on in the upcoming weeks - emotional, spiritual, social, occupational, financial, physical, environmental, or intellectual?

Sometimes the people we care about go through things that we don't know how to handle. Showing compassion and kindness is the only thing we can ask from ourselves - and normally is all anyone hurting is looking for to help them heal.

Acts of kindness no matter how big or small speak great wonders. Think about a time that you were struggling - what did you appreciate most that others gave or said to you? Ask the person you're worried about what they need from you, and show up when and where you can.

Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup.

Call to Action: The Assembly Speaker, Senate President and Governor Need to Hear From You on the Indexing Bill!

Proposed bill A508/S2668 is on the line to establish an annual cost of living adjustment in support of those connected with programs related to mental health, substance use treatment, and services for individuals living with developmental disabilities. The passing of this bill would make services more accessible to individuals who are in need, and would put neither the individuals nor the state in a financial deficit.

Visit the link below to easily reach out to Senate President Scutari, Assembly Speaker Coughlin and Governor Murphy and have this bill supported!

Whether meeting new people or repairing past relationships, trust and honesty are key components in any healthy relationship. It can be difficult to know who and when trust can really be found in others.

When looking for safe and healthy relationships, it is important to feel accepted for who you are and as you are. Any feelings of pressure, hesitation, or judgment from someone might mean that they're not worthy of your trust and time.

Finances can be a major stressor during the holiday season. Between planning for winter upcharges in energy bills, gift exchanges between friends and family, and unexpected daily costs, there's a lot to balance.

When we feel overwhelmed with expenses during certain parts of the year, it's important that we remember to prioritize our needs first. Without taking care of our daily health and wellness, we can't share to others in a positive way.

Consider having intentional conversations with your loved ones about finances during the holidays or other giving times, and set limits and goals between each other to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

You are allowed to be hesitant to move forward when life tests your strength and mobility. What you do with that fear, however, can define how strong you truly believe you are.

We often lean into fear thinking that it is the easier way out of a hard situation. When we prove to ourselves and our obstacles that we're bigger than our struggle, empowerment shines through.

Creating art allows us to do many things in managing our emotions, especially when we don't allow the idea of 'perfection' to get in the way of the process.

Whether you're looking to try drawing, painting, dancing, or anything in between, practicing mindfulness through the process of art enhances the many benefits for our mental health.

For example, some ways that art can be used for decreasing anxiety include focusing on the touch and feel of the supplies used, playing music while designing your project, and reproducing an image based on a scene of peace or comfort.

Have you ever looked at a nutrition label and read "guilt" on the list?

Society's diet culture has created a trend of putting moral value on foods, deeming some as "bad" or "guilty." At the end of the day, food is used to restore your body's energy to continue running vital systems, habits and routines in your body's function. It is not used to make someone feel shamed for what they are able to or want to consume.

What foods should you eat, then? The ones that make you feel good, the ones you have access to, and the ones that provide the nutrition that your unique body needs.

Gratitude is not about the materialism that we usually think about - but instead, it focuses on taking the small moments out of the big picture and appreciating them each time.

Learning to see the value in everything one has in their life can take time and tragedy. Finding comfort in accepting the current reality and challenging their resilience to continue growing for more is one of the best forms of productive gratitude.

Celebrating holidays can look different for everyone. Large groups of family and friends gathering or a solo evening with selfcare - there's no right or wrong way to spend these days.

When we do get together with people in our lives, it is important to continue to maintain our boundaries, no matter our relationship with those we love. Holidays can be triggering in many ways, and making sure that we take care of ourselves first is most important.

We are allowed to do what's best for us, no matter the day of the year.

Frost on the windows and blustery wind aren't always what we think of when we talk about "nice weather." Even on days that the weather doesn't feel the best, setting a goal to spend a few minutes outside weekly can help to keep our physical and mental health regulated.

Taking a walk around your block, bringing the trash cans back to their home base, or sitting on a park bench for a moment can be enough to get fresh air, Vitamin D, and a reset connection with nature. When doing these things, it's important to pay attention to extreme weather conditions and what you individually feel able to experience, however.

What do you like to do to stay in nature when it's cold out?

Staying productive and active can be a great tool for our mental health, especially during colder months when we may want to stay in and do little. When we start using a busy schedule as a substitute for taking care of ourselves, however, the impact can become pretty negative.

Whether you're making plans with friends, working extra hours, or running errands all day, make sure to check in with yourself and see what you're doing for yourself in between it all. If you notice something has changed - like your usual reading habits have decreased or you're not as easy to talk to lately - try to make a plan of how to save some of your time and energy for you.

Hunger and homelessness in America are at a rise. Whether you see it in your community or not, there are people living unhoused and unfed.

At our community wellness centers, we work to provide support and resources to as many as we can. From serving hot meals to submitting housing vouchers, our peer teams are here to work together with those who need it.

November 13th is World Kindness Day!

Being kind isn't something that we only do for others that we care about - it's for us to practice with ourselves too. Some small acts of kindness to work into your everyday routine include saying positive affirmations, taking breaks after completing hard tasks, and being patient with your progress.

If you haven't already, check out our November edition of Words of Wellness for more ideas on how to celebrate and share kindness with others and yourself today.

Our Week of Action starts tomorrow, including opportunities to contact legislators and speak up about the need for greater wages and supportive resources.

No matter what stage you show up in, all you can ask from yourself is to show up.

While you are working everyday on so many pieces of yourself, remember that who you are right now is just as valuable and admired as the version that you're investing in.

When we think that we will only be our best selves when we get to the "next" step, we take away the value of all the work we've already done to be our current selves.

It's important to keep up with our intellectual wellness to allow us to continue staying creative, innovative, and sharp-minded.

Intelligence isn't measured by what level of education you've completed or how well you perform in tests. Instead, intelligence is understood as your ability to keep your mind active and ready to create new ideas and solutions that work best for your own needs.

Some may say the most intelligent people know how to take care of themselves first, in keeping up with their wellness.

Empathy is a strength that helps to develop healthy and productive relationships, where you're able to support someone while still understanding your own experiences and emotions.

The goal of practicing empathy is to allow others to feel heard and understood without judging or projecting your own experiences without their permission. Giving someone a safe space to share how they're doing and working through how they can plan to move ahead is one of the great tools empathy provides.
