Today FFD participated in the Memorial Day Ceremonies in our community. The members attended the American Legion Post 473 ceremony held at the Post Home on Centre St. which honored those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. At the event FFD Engineer Cal Herring received the Citizen of the Year Award from the Legion membership. After the ceremony the Department marched in the annual parade. Later in the afternoon the truck, rescue, car, and utility responded to a grill fire in the 700 block of Front St. The grill fire was extinguished and with elevated TIC temperatures, inspection holes were placed in the exterior wall with the can being used for final extinguishment. This was the 14th. incident that FFD responded to since Friday.

FFD responded to 5 incidents in a period of 9 hours today, so far. The largest incident was a 2 alarm structure fire in the Greenridge Section of Hazle Twp. The truck and rescue responded with the truck taking up a staged position and then moving to the rear. Both 136 crews assisted 141 and other regional stations on final extinguishment and overhaul. 141 Chief Scott Kostician had the command. Thanks to Lake Harmony for covering the Northside while we were on the box. FFD also responded to 2 EMS assists with Medic 41, a smoke investigation, and a wires down all of which were in the borough. Earlier in the week the engine responded to 2 investigations and the truck and engine went to White Haven on a structure box but were cancelled en route. The Department also assisted our good friends at American Legion Post 473 with preparing their grounds for the Memorial Day Ceremony.

FFD expresses it sincere appreciation to LCBC Church for their generous donations for our firefighter rehabilitation supplies. Donations such as this provides our hard working firefighters the opportunity to recharge on the fireground. Thanks to Joe Ursta and his family who were representing LCBC.

Again this week FFD was out helping the community by assisting DPW with the annual spring cleaning of the mid town. Also while performing this a box was dropped by Luzerne County for a structure fire in the 500 block of Washington St. The rescue was first in with its own hydrant to find smoke in the basement. The truck arrived next and both crews advanced into the lower level with a line to find a hot water heater with its wiring and insulation on fire with extension into the flooring support members. The rescue crew quickly extinguished the fire with the truck working on ventilation. The engine stood by at the hydrant at Main and Sabol Sts. to assume the “c” side assignment and then moved forward to assist with hose pick up. Foster engine, Hazle tower, White Haven rescue engine, and Valley rescue were placed in staging. Weatherly RIT was cancelled en route. Chief Joseph J. Stepansky had the command.

FFD responded to three incidents yesterday. The first was an AFA assist to White Haven Fire Co., No. 1, which we were held in quarters until verified it was a faulty detector. Next came an assist to FPD for a force entry call on the Hill. The truck responded and gained access for the police. Later on FPD and the Luzerne County Coroners Office requested the department back to scene to assist. The truck crew assisted with the removal and the engine crew performed decontamination. Code Enforcement was also on scene. Earlier in the week the engine responded to a “wires down” in the Alvington Section.
