✨ Big news at Deacon’s Corner ✨

Today we stepped back inside the old crab shack — and while it was a little heartbreaking it feels like the start of a new chapter.

There’s work to be done, absolutely. But this space has always been a gathering place, and we believe its best days are still ahead.

Soon, we’ll be beginning updates and exploring a fresh vision for the south end — one that supports local food entrepreneurs and creates more reasons for people to gather (we’d love to hear everyones thoughts about the concept below 🙂 )

Our Thoughts:

👩‍🍳 A space that helps small, local makers thrive
🍺 A seasonal beer & wine window
🚚 A couple of food trucks joining the mix (maybe some you already know 😲)
☕️ Amazing coffee

We’ve already had local businesses reach out after hearing the buzz, excited about the possibility of being part of what’s next. That kind of energy tells us we’re moving in the right direction.

The goal?
More food options.
More community.
More life at Deacon’s Corner.

We’re just getting started — and we’d love to hear from you.

👉 What would you be excited to see here?
👉 What’s missing on the south end?

Exciting times ahead for this small but mighty community.

Stay tuned. ✨

For the past decade, we’ve been quietly pushing for progress behind the scenes. The timing never quite felt right to share much publicly, and more often than not the journey felt like setback after setback. At times, it was hard to know if anyone would ever notice or care about the long road this place was on.

Part of our silence was simply a desire to do the hard work first. But it was also because we never wanted this place to feel like just another forgotten property. Our hope has always been the opposite — to care for it well and, in time, create something genuinely beautiful that gives back to the community that surrounds it.

That vision is what has carried us through the long years of uncertainty. And now, for the first time in more than a decade, something meaningful has finally changed.

After many years of studies, environmental contractors who steered us wrong, test holes, and permitting challenges, we were granted approval this past December to install an independent drainfield — with permission to begin installation this coming summer.

That may sound like a small step, but for this property it changes everything. Without a working way to handle water and bathrooms, no meaningful repair or restoration of the buildings could ever begin. This approval is the first real sign of forward movement after being stalled for over a decade!

We’re excited not because the work is finished, but because it can finally start.

Our hope remains what it has always been — to see this place become a welcoming gathering spot for the community once again, honoring its long history while giving it new life for the years ahead. There is still a long road of cleanup, repair, and careful restoration in front of us, but this summer marks the beginning of a chapter we’ve been waiting many years to reach.

Thank you to everyone who has shared encouragement, memories, and hope for this little corner of Freeland. We’re grateful you’re here, and we look forward to sharing each real step forward as it happens.

As a thanks for the follow and a hope for things to come, here’s a small sneak peek at the plans for what the rear side of the property holds. Thank you for being here. Thank you for dreaming with us.

A new chapter is beginning in Freeland.

For many years, this small commercial space has been home to local businesses serving our community, and we’re grateful for every person who has brought life through its doors. As one chapter closes, we’re thoughtfully preparing the building for what comes next.

The space is now being refreshed and readied for a new tenant with vision — someone who values community, takes pride in their environment, and is excited to create something lasting and meaningful for Whidbey Island residents and visitors alike.

Well-suited for a café/coffee business, food trucks, studio, or neighborhood service, this centrally located Freeland spot offers visibility, accessibility, and the chance to become part of a place people already know and love.

If you or someone you know has been waiting for the right opportunity to open or grow a small business on Whidbey Island, we’d love to connect and hear your ideas.

Please feel free to message directly for details or to start a conversation about the space’s next chapter.
