Position: Maintenance Worker I
Reports to: Foreman
Job requirements:
• Working knowledge of heavy equipment and its operation.
• Possess and maintain a valid Illinois Class B CDL license.
• Be available on a 24 hour/7day basis.
• Ability to occasionally lift 50 to 100 pounds and frequently lift 25 to 50 pounds
Anticipated hours per week: 40 with some overtime.
The Maintenance Worker I (MWI) under limited supervision performs work as assigned pertaining to road and bridge maintenance and construction. They will perform routine preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
The Maintenance Worker I (MWI) shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
• The MWI shall operate equipment and vehicles during maintenance/construction activities including minor field repair of equipment.
• A MWI shall perform activities such as: road surface maintenance, pavement patching operations, snow/ice control and removal, vegetation control/cutting and drainage
maintenance/construction.
• He/she shall perform preventive maintenance on equipment (i.e.: oil changes, belts, hoses, grease, tier repair, etc.)
• The MWI will assist in traffic control devices maintenance and work zone safety.
• A MWI will perform general “housekeeping” duties in the maintenance building such as sweeping floors, trash removal, drain cleaning, etc.
• He/she shall perform material stockpiling as needed.
• In addition to these duties, the Maintenance Worker I shall perform other duties as assigned by his/her supervisor.

City of Freeport Press Release
Walnut Avenue Lift Station Construction Update – Week of May 11, 2026
The City of Freeport would like to inform residents and businesses of upcoming construction activity related to the Walnut Avenue Lift Station project.
Walnut Road is anticipated to be closed on Monday, May 11 depending on weather conditions and construction progress. This roadway closure is expected to at least 3 weeks at minimum.
During this time, crews will also begin work on removing the east side of the roadway and also boring the force main, which will require specialized equipment on-site.
Access to the nursing home will be maintained at all times throughout construction. Emergency personnel will be updated with directions of access. Currently the North side will be open.
Please note that construction schedules, including road closures, are subject to change based on weather and field conditions. The City will continue to provide updates as information becomes available, and coordination with affected parties, including the nursing home will remain ongoing.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we complete this important infrastructure improvement project.

Walnut Avenue Lift Station Construction Update – Week of May 4, 2026

Kelsey Excavating is scheduled to resume work beginning Monday, May 4, 2026. As part of this work, Walnut Road is anticipated to be closed on Tuesday, May 5, or Wednesday, May 6, depending on weather conditions and construction progress.

Any college kids looking for a summer job? The Stephenson County Highway Department is looking for a seasonal worker.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Seasonal Worker - SW

Reports to: Forman

Job requirements: Must be a minimum of 18 years of age and possess a valid Illinois Driver’s license.

Anticipated hours per week: 40

The Seasonal Worker (SW) under limited supervision, performs work as assigned pertaining to general road maintenance and operates basic machinery in performance of these duties. This is a seasonal, temporary, part time position.

The Seasonal Worker (SW) shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

The SW will operate mowing equipment along County Road R.O.W.

He/she will perform general labor on road maintenance activities.

They will perform general custodial duties as assigned in the maintenance building (i.e.: sweeping floors, clean drains, wash walls, clean equipment and vehicles, etc.)

In addition to these duties, the Buildings and Grounds personnel shall perform other duties as assigned by his/her supervisor.

VERY URGENT< NO OVERSIZE LOADS TOMORROW, UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE....

The Stephenson County (Illinois) Highway Department will be installing the Spring Weight Limit Posting signs on Stephenson County highways today, February 17, 2026. Enforcement of the posted weight limits will begin at 7:00 A.M. on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

During the Spring Weight Limit Posting period, we will not be issuing any overweight vehicle permits for transports on county or township roads. We will continue to issue permits for oversize vehicles.

I will send out a follow-up e-mail when the Spring Weight Limit Postings are removed. The posting removal date is not known at this time. The duration of the Spring Weight Limit Posting period depends upon the weather conditions during the posting period. Please check our webpage (Stephenson County, IL (stephensoncountyil.gov) regularly for updates.

Please note: The Highway Commissioners for the individual Townships within Stephenson County also post Spring Weight Limits for the roadways under their jurisdiction. The specific weight limits and posting duration is at the discretion of each Highway Commissioner and does not necessarily correlate with those established for the county roads.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
HVAC WORK AT THE
STEPHENSON COUNTY HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT

The Stephenson County Highway Department will be accepting proposals until 10:00 AM on February 27, 2026, for the furnishing and installation of 4 furnace/air conditioning unit(s) in the office building located at 295 W. Lamm Rd. in Freeport, IL. The existing units are currently on top of the building, and anyone looking to submit a bid can call and set up an appointment to look at the existing unit. Please call Brian Peight @ 815.235.7497 to set up a time.

Proposals submitted must include a general description of the work being proposed, the manufacturer make and model of equipment being proposed, warranty information, operational efficiencies, timeline for the project and a lump sum cost for the entire project. All costs will include furnishing, installation and making operational equipment, including initial startup.

The Stephenson County Highway Department will evaluate the proposals and choose the proposal that provides the most overall economical solution looking at not only the initial cost, but operational and maintenance costs in the future.
