We officially launched our Fall & Winter Safety Series this morning!

As the days get shorter, temperatures begin to drop, and we start preparing our homes and families for the colder months ahead, Freeport Fire Rescue wants to help our community stay one step ahead.

📅 Every Friday for the next 9 weeks, we’ll share a new safety reminder focused on some of the simple things we can all do to make this fall and winter a little safer.

These aren't meant to be complicated lessons—just quick community reminders about things that are easy to overlook as the seasons change.

🔥 Heating System Readiness 🔥

The cooler nights are starting to creep in, and before long many of us will be turning on the furnace, boiler, or other heating equipment for the first time this season.

Now is a great time to prepare — before you actually need the heat!

A few simple things to keep in mind:

🔧 Schedule annual service — Have your furnace, boiler, or heating system inspected and serviced before the cold weather settles in.

🚨 Check your smoke alarms — Test them, replace batteries when needed, and remember that smoke alarms generally should be replaced when they reach 10 years old.

☠️ Test your carbon monoxide alarms — CO is colorless and odorless. Make sure your alarms are working and located where they can help protect your family.

🔥 Consider a combustible gas detector — If your home uses natural gas or propane, a gas detector can provide another layer of protection.

And remember: if you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide, or believe something isn't right, get everyone to a safe location and call 9-1-1.

A little preparation today can make a BIG difference tomorrow.

🌙 BE SEEN. BE SAFE.

As the days get shorter, more of our walks, bike rides, runs, and evening activities are happening in lower light.

If you’re out after dark, make yourself easy to see! Wear bright or reflective clothing, use lights, and stay alert around traffic.

🚶 Walkers & runners
🚲 Bikes & e-bikes
🐕 Dog walkers
🛴 Scooters & other riders

Drivers: Slow down, stay alert, and expect people to be out even after the sun goes down.

A little visibility can make a BIG difference.

🇺🇸 HAPPY (almost) LABOR DAY FROM FREEPORT FIRE RESCUE! 🇺🇸

Labor Day is a time to recognize the hard work and contributions of American workers and, for many of us, an opportunity to enjoy a long weekend with family and friends.

Whether your plans include a backyard cookout, a trip to camp, boating, hitting the road, enjoying a campfire, or squeezing in one more summer adventure, Freeport Fire Rescue wants everyone to have a fun AND safe Labor Day!

🔥 Firing up the grill? Keep grills away from homes, decks, railings, and anything that can burn. Never leave a hot grill unattended.

🏕️ Having a campfire? Check current fire conditions, keep water nearby, never leave your fire unattended, and make sure it is completely out before leaving.

🚤 Heading out on the water? Wear your life jacket, keep an eye on the weather, have the proper safety equipment aboard, and boat sober.

🚗 Hitting the road? Buckle up, put the phone down, allow a little extra travel time, watch for motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians, and never drive impaired.

☀️ Spending the day outside? Stay hydrated, use sunscreen, know your limits, and keep an eye on children, older family members, and pets.

🍻 Celebrating with a few adult beverages? Have a plan before the celebration starts. A designated driver, ride home, or place to stay is always better than an emergency.

Labor Day weekend may feel like the unofficial end of summer, so get outside, make some memories, enjoy everything Maine has to offer—and take those few extra steps to make sure everyone makes it home safely.

Some great information to go along with our recent post about being seen as shared by the NHTSA and Town of Freeport Pages.

55% of all bicyclist fatalities happen between 3 p.m. and midnight. ⚠️🚲

As daylight hours shorten this fall, visibility and awareness become even more important:

🚗 Look twice at intersections and before turning right on red.
🚗 Slow down in high-pedestrian and cycling corridors.

🚴 Wear hi-vis gear after dark.
🚴 Follow the rules of the road.

We ALL share the responsibility for getting home SAFE.
