Hose Company #5

Hose Company #5 Organized April 30, 1923 Smith as 1st Assistant foreman and Charles Eppie as 2nd Assistant foreman.

In November 1911, Russell Hose Company #2 of the Roosevelt Fire Department was formed by a group of forty members and they elected William F Pearsall as their first foreman, F.F. They occupied a barn for a meeting place on the west side of Main Street, just north of Lillian Avenue. The area, between Main Street and Union Street and from Seman Avenue to Colonial Avenue, was known as Russell Park na

med after the great stage star Lillian Russel which is also the origin of the company's name. Miss Russell's real name was Helen Leonard after which Leonard Avenue was also named. Their first fire apparatus was a hose reel which was replaced on November 20, 1912 when they purchased on auction Ever Ready Hose Company 1's horse drawn hose wagon that was painted white.

Michael Gordon is a lifelong member of the Freeport community whose service reflects dedication, perseverance, and heart. He joined the Freeport Fire Department in 2013, steadily rising through the ranks through hard work and commitment. In 2023, he was elected Captain of Hose 5, earning the respect of his peers by consistently going above and beyond the call of duty.

In 2024, during the Freeport Fire Department’s historic 150th year of service, Chief Gordon achieved a monumental milestone earning the title of 3rd Assistant Chief. His election marked a powerful moment in Freeport’s history, as he became the first Black firefighter ever elected Chief in the department. He also secured the position with the largest margin of victory in any Chief election a testament to his character, accountability, and the trust he has built within the department and the community.

Chief Gordon is widely known throughout Freeport and neighboring communities not only for his leadership, but for his spirit. A natural comedian, he brings light and positivity into every room he enters. Yet beyond the laughter is a leader deeply committed to progress. He is passionate about strengthening firematic training opportunities and building lasting relationships between the department and the community it proudly serves.

On February 26, 2026, Chief Gordon was honored by the Chamber of Commerce for his outstanding impact as an African American leader in the community. In his words:

“Valuing Black culture and history starts with education, acknowledgment, and opportunity. It means celebrating achievements, but also creating pathways for leadership and inclusion year-round — not just in February.”

Chief Gordon’s journey is more than a personal achievement — it is a symbol of progress, resilience, and possibility. His leadership continues to inspire the next generation to serve with integrity, pride, and purpose.

At around 1145am, our Bravest were alerted to respond to a reported house fire in the southeast section of the Village. First arriving units found a well-involved rear deck with extension to the house. A working fire alert was re-transmitted, bringing mutual aid resources into to help extinguish the fire. This alarm rose to a 2nd alarm, bringing even more resources to the scene and to cover the Village for any additional alarms. Patriot Hose Co 4 (Unit 214) was first arriving, and all operations were under the command of Chief of Dept Gonzalez (2100). The fire was brought under control in approximately 2 hours and the Chiefs Office thanks all of our mutual aid partners for their assistance. The residence suffered significant fire damage and the scene was left with the Nassau County Fire Marshals Office for investigation. Additionally, while we were operating at this alarm, a water rescue in our waterways was also dispatched and answered by our water rescue mutual aid partners. The results of the water rescue proved negative and SeaTow was to handle. A busy lunchtime here in Freeport.
