Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary

Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary Only one mile from the bustling downtown of Freeport, Maine, Mast Landing is 140 acres of diverse habitat rich in human and natural history.

It is located along the Harraseeket River estuary. Open dawn to dusk year-round, please leave dogs at home. More than three miles of trails wind along a stream and tidal marsh and through orchard, fields, and forest. Well-used by visitors, they are ideal for hiking and cross-country skiing. Pets are not permitted in Maine Audubon wildlife sanctuaries. Trails

Please stay on trails, trails are for

foot traffic only, and carry out all trash. Please no pets, fires, fi****ms, or alcoholic beverages. Ridge Trail (1.6 mile)

Access all sanctuary trails from the Ridge Trail, which begins at the kiosk in the parking lot. You also can reach the Ridge Trail from Link Trail 1, off the service road. The Ridge Trail winds through most types of habitat in the sanctuary, as well as past an old dam site and the historic mill-master’s house, now a private residence for sanctuary caretakers. Orchard and Deer Run Trails (0.5 mile)
The Orchard Trail branches from the Ridge Trail soon after the Ridge Trail entrance at the parking lot. It leads to the Deer Run Trail, which rejoins the Ridge Trail. These trails pass through orchard, former farm fields, and mixed coniferous forest of pine, hemlock, and fir. Mill Stream Trail (0.3 mile)
Branching off from the Ridge Trail/service road at the dam site 0.3 miles southeast of the parking lot, the Mill Stream Trail follows the stream through riparian (river) habitat and overlooks the maple swamp before meeting back up with the Ridge Trail. Bench Loop Trail (0.25 mile)
The Bench Loop Trail branches off from the Ridge Trail 0.8 miles north of the parking lot and features the best views of a hemlock ravine. Estuary Trail (0.4 mile)
Beginning and ending at the Ridge Trail/service road, the Estuary Trail, which is steep in places, takes you through field-grown white pines to the point over- looking the estuary.

Earlier this month, volunteers from IDEXX spent a day with Maine Audubon Land Steward Liz Thibault helping trail efforts at Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary. Six hardworking individuals came together to revitalize the sanctuary's picnic area, trim back overgrown trail corridors, and took part in an exciting tread resurfacing project! These volunteers used their muscles to help move endless loads of wood chips and stone to improve the visitor experience and protect the resources of this unique spot nestled in downtown Freeport. The tread maintenance project is one of two sections that will receive the addition of what's known in the trail world as a turnpike. This type of trail feature is typically constructed in low, relatively flat wet areas. These structures utilize geotextile fabric, angular stone, and gravel to create better drainage in spots that often lack the slope or proper soil type needed to shed water naturally. Maine Audubon staff would like to extend a huge thank you to the folks from IDEXX as well as all volunteers that have taken part in the 2024 sanctuary happenings! We've got two volunteer days coming in October so please join us!

Building bridges! Maine Audubon Land Steward Liz Thibault and other staff and volunteers have been busy improving the visitor experience at Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary. If you are anywhere near Freeport (the sanctuary is only a mile from downtown), please visit! Read about the new puncheon-style bridge, see a slide show of the process, and find out how to volunteer for future projects here:

In the spring of 2024, I was tasked with taking a closer look at the existing trail networks that weave through all Maine Audubon sanctuaries. As with most trails throughout the northeast, I observed wet, rooty, and rocky conditions that are often indicative of a trail experiencing erosion at an acc...

Do you like to explore? Walk through streams? Care about water quality? Are you looking for an excuse to be outdoors? If you answer yes to those questions, then this community science project, to explore water quality and stream health, is perfect for you.
Maine Audubon, in partnership with Trout Unlimited Merrymeeting Bay chapter, is looking for volunteers to help sample Frost Gully Brook to determine what sensitive, moderately sensitive, and tolerant large aquatic insects (macroinvertebrates) are present in the water, post dam removal. Last summer, the last of the three dams on the Frost Gully Brook system were removed, freeing this tributary that flows into the Harraseeket River, which flows into Casco Bay.

You'd be working in teams of three or four, sampling at a location in Freeport over the next year. We will provide the training, equipment, maps of the survey streams, and data forms and instructions. You can attend an in-person training on May 16, 5:30-7:30 pm, at Selene’s Fly Shop, 279 Water St, Gardiner or you can do online training by watching two videos.

On Nov. 8, a brush fire occurred at the Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary in Freeport. This sanctuary is a well-loved 145-acre diverse habitat rich in human and natural history. Though a small portion of the sanctuary did suffer some damage, no individuals or infrastructure were damaged in the fire, and the forest canopy/midstory remains primarily intact. Maine Audubon owes a huge thanks to the Freeport Fire Department and Freeport Deputy Chief Eric Sylvain for coordinating the response.
