The Silver Bullet (at the Public Safety building) is convenient, but is not Freeport’s best recycling option. Because it is unstaffed, open 24/7, and does not compact materials, it can fill up fast ... especially when cardboard boxes are left whole.
- Whole boxes waste space.
- Wasted space means more hauling.
- More hauling means higher costs, more emissions, and less efficient recycling.
For the best results, everyone is encouraged to use the Recycling/Transfer Facility at 100 Hedgehog Mountain Road which is open Wednesdays - Saturdays 7am - 4pm. There all recycling material is compacted before transport, making recycling more efficient and cost-effective for the Town and taxpayers.
If you use the silver bullet, please do your part by:
- Flattening cardboard
- Leaving items inside the container; and
- Checking (and following) the accepted items list at ecomaine's Recyclopedia: https://www.ecomaine.org/recyclopedia
Recycle smarter - it saves space, trips, and tax dollars.

Public Works will begin crack sealing on South Street at Bow Street, and continuing on South Street to South Freeport Road, past South Freeport Village Market and up to Smelt Brook Road, at which point Maine DOT maintains South Freeport Road as it continues back up to Rte 1.

The rubberized crack fill preserves the road by keeping water from getting in and disrupting the foundation.

This project is scheduled over the next 2-3 weeks and traffic will continue to flow around as the work is done.
