Library Update: Library staff took early precautions by moving materials off lower shelves, unplugging equipment, and placing sandbag barriers. Volunteers added additional barriers to doorways and around the building. Despite this, water entered Village Hall and spread throughout the Neuschafer Community Library.
We were relieved to find no materials came into direct contact with floodwater and began cleanup efforts (AND that the new facility remained dry). Despite attempts to shop vac the saturated carpet, placing large dehumidifiers, and ensuring continuous airflow, we noticed our books absorbing moisture from the air.
Due to high humidity, mold remains a very real possibility if conditions cannot be stabilized quickly.
Protecting it is critical—not only because of its financial value, but because it represents the core of library service and access for our community. Loss of the collection would impact our ability to reopen as well as maintaining services and funding tied to circulation.
The full collection has now been removed as we work with OWLS, recovery specialists, and other libraries across the state who have experienced similar events to determine next steps.
This was a rapid-response effort that started with staff and grew throughout the day with community support. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who reached out or offered support. There will be many opportunities to help as recovery continues and we prepare to move into our new facility.
Some have asked if the collection is lost, can we organize a book drive or a GoFundMe? — Our director is already leading efforts to secure support, funding, and resources through state and regional channels. We’re in good hands, and we will let the community know when direct support is needed. For now, we encourage those looking to help to continue supporting neighbors and community members who have experienced personal loss in this flooding event.
Thank you for your patience, your care, and your continued support. This response effort reflects the strength of our community, and we are incredibly grateful.
