NOTE: all the materials on Libby are digital, not physical items. It holds a separate database from InfoSoup, although those items are still purchased by and shared within our library system.

REMINDER: We are CLOSED until further notice. Please DO NOT return books, movies, etc. at this location, because our space currently looks like this, plus the carpeting and flooring are ripped out. 🔨😬 (See our previous posts for more information). If you put anything in our book-drop, it will end up on the floor, so please don't use it.

There are over a dozen libraries in our system where you can return items instead (we physically cannot process them right now, unfortunately). To see a full list of OWLS member libraries follow this link: https://owlsweb.org/member-libraries/

If you happened to return anything over the last two weeks - it has been taken care of by our wonderful staff. Holds have been transferred to the Weyauwega Public Library.

More updates soon! Message us directly on Facebook with any questions in the meantime.

Library Update 4/28:
We learned something important: if you give children hammers, they will *enthusiastically* take care of a good portion of the demolition—under close and constant adult supervision, of course. 😊

Over the weekend, nearly all materials and shelving were cleared from the building so that damaged drywall, insulation, carpet, and flooring could be removed. Most importantly, we’ve been assured that the collection at risk has been successfully treated and saved! 🎉 Specialized efforts over the weekend removed excess moisture, protecting both the materials and the approximately $350,000 it would cost to replace them. Opening a new library without books is likely every librarian’s nightmare, so this is a tremendous relief.

At this time, there is no clear timeline for repairs or reopening. This is complicated with summer reading coming up and the transition to the new facility by August. However, creative problem solving is something we do best! The Library Board, Director, and staff are actively working to determine next steps and will share updates as soon as more information is available.

Thank you all for your continued support—we are incredibly grateful for this community. ❤️

Library Update: Library staff took early precautions by moving materials off lower shelves, unplugging equipment, and placing sandbag barriers. Volunteers added additional barriers to doorways and around the building. Despite this, water entered Village Hall and spread throughout the Neuschafer Community Library.

We were relieved to find no materials came into direct contact with floodwater and began cleanup efforts (AND that the new facility remained dry). Despite attempts to shop vac the saturated carpet, placing large dehumidifiers, and ensuring continuous airflow, we noticed our books absorbing moisture from the air.

Due to high humidity, mold remains a very real possibility if conditions cannot be stabilized quickly.

Protecting it is critical—not only because of its financial value, but because it represents the core of library service and access for our community. Loss of the collection would impact our ability to reopen as well as maintaining services and funding tied to circulation.

The full collection has now been removed as we work with OWLS, recovery specialists, and other libraries across the state who have experienced similar events to determine next steps.

This was a rapid-response effort that started with staff and grew throughout the day with community support. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who reached out or offered support. There will be many opportunities to help as recovery continues and we prepare to move into our new facility.

Some have asked if the collection is lost, can we organize a book drive or a GoFundMe? — Our director is already leading efforts to secure support, funding, and resources through state and regional channels. We’re in good hands, and we will let the community know when direct support is needed. For now, we encourage those looking to help to continue supporting neighbors and community members who have experienced personal loss in this flooding event.

Thank you for your patience, your care, and your continued support. This response effort reflects the strength of our community, and we are incredibly grateful.

(Photo note: These images capture part of the ongoing effort, and do not reflect everyone who has contributed. We appreciate each and every one of you.)
