🌎 World Environment Day reminds us that protecting the planet doesn’t only happen on a global scale — it starts right here at home.

Every bottle recycled correctly, every cardboard box kept clean and dry, and every plastic bag taken to store drop off bins creates a ripple effect far beyond our community. When we recycle right, we reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, save energy, and help protect ecosystems around the world.

The choices we make locally have a worldwide impact. A cleaner recycling stream means more material can successfully become new products instead of ending up in landfills. Proper disposal of hazardous materials keeps harmful chemicals out of our soil and waterways. Small actions, repeated by thousands of people, become meaningful environmental change.

This World Environment Day, remember: protecting the environment isn’t just something that happens somewhere else. It happens every day in our homes, at our recycling bins, and throughout our community. ♻️🌍

Lead-acid batteries should never go in your household trash or recycling bin. These batteries contain materials that can be hazardous if improperly disposed of — but they are also highly recyclable when handled correctly.

Did you know? Lead-acid batteries can be taken to any business that sells lead-acid batteries for recycling. Look for the static cling sticker below to easily identify local businesses that accept lead-acid batteries year-round.

You can also bring your lead-acid batteries to the Ottawa Sandusky Seneca Joint Solid Waste Management District’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection.

Recycling these batteries keeps lead and acid out of the environment while recovering valuable materials that can be used again and again. Proper recycling protects workers, equipment, and our communities.

Waste Audit #20: Harris Township
https://canva.link/1wwac3tgackg0dt

The Harris Township recycling site has a new home!

I recorded a waste audit at the old location, but just one week later the site was moved. We'd love to hear what you think of the new spot—and so would the township trustees.

Here's hoping the new location keeps the bins high and dry. No more bins floating away during floods! 😅 If you know, you know.

Check out the audit and let us know your thoughts on the move. ♻️

♻️ REMINDER: PLEASE USE THE FOUNDATION PARK RECYCLING SITE PROPERLY ♻️

Unfortunately, this is an example of illegal dumping that occurred at the Foundation Park Recycling Center over the weekend.

The recycling bins are intended ONLY for approved recyclable materials. Household garbage, furniture, construction debris, and other non-recyclable items should not be left at the site.

Please remember that the recycling center is monitored. The City does have cameras at the location, and footage is reviewed whenever illegal dumping occurs. Citations are issued when violations are identified.

If you are unsure what items can and cannot be dropped off at the recycling center, please visit our Recycling Resource Page:
https://fostoriaohio.gov/recycle-fostoria

Residents should also be aware that Fostoria Codified Ordinances Chapter 521, Section 521.08 addresses garbage disposal. Placing garbage in recycling bins is a third-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to 60 days in jail, a fine of up to $500, or both.

The Foundation Park Recycling Center is a valuable community resource, and it is up to all of us to help keep it clean and functioning properly.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

We may not be so subtle next time...

By not breaking down cardboard boxes, you are wasting a lot of valuable space in the recycling bins. Space that we have to pay to get serviced when the bins get full. Flatten your cardboard boxes to save room in the bins for more recycling.
