It’s Financial Literacy Month! This month, we’re busting common money myths and sharing the realities that can help you take control of your finances.

Myth: “Budgeting means I can’t spend on things I enjoy.”
Reality: A good budget helps you plan for both your needs and your wants.

Budgeting isn’t about restriction—it’s about choice. When you know where your money is going, you can enjoy the things that matter most without stress.

When Megan began searching for financial help in May 2025, she wasn’t sure anyone would be able to assist her.

“I thought no one would want to help me with $18 in my checking account,” she said.

After family members suggested financial advising services, Megan decided to search online instead. A search for “financial help” in Northwest Ohio led her to the Financial Opportunity Center at Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP). It’s Financial Literacy Month! This month, we’re busting common money myths and sharing the realities that can help you take control of your finances.

Myth: “I don’t make enough money to save.”
Reality: Small amounts do add up—and they matter more than you think.

Saving isn’t about having a lot to start—it’s about starting with what you have. Even setting aside just $5–$10 a week can build momentum, create a habit, and grow into something meaningful over time.

Consistency > perfection. Every little bit is a step toward financial confidence and stability.

Looking for a simple and fun activity you can make at home with infants and toddlers?

In this video, we visit Mrs. Michelle and Ms. Cori in their infant and toddler classroom as they create sensory bottles using everyday materials. Along the way, Mrs. Michelle explains what “sensory” means — using our senses like sight, sound, and touch to explore the world around us.

As children shake, roll, and observe their sensory bottles, they’re building fine motor skills and beginning to understand concepts like object permanence — learning that items still exist even when they move out of sight. It’s a fun and calming way to support early development through play.

This activity is easy to adapt with what you have at home. No funnel? No problem! You can simply roll up a piece of paper and use it as a funnel to help pour in materials like rice or pasta.

This video is part of our series featuring Stricker Family Development Center teachers sharing simple, hands-on activities families can try at home while learning how play supports early childhood development.

Materials Needed:
• Empty plastic bottle with lid
• Rice, pasta, or other small fillers
• Small, fun household objects
• Optional: funnel (or paper to make your own)

Try it at home and explore the power of sensory play!
