Hello CSB Family!

We’re excited to announce that the California School for the Blind will be celebrating White Cane Day (WCD) on Wednesday, October 14, 2026!
White Cane Day is recognized annually on October 15th to honor individuals who are blind or visually impaired and to raise awareness about the white cane as a symbol of independence and mobility. At CSB, it’s a day filled with fun, learning, and community spirit as our faculty, students, friends, and families come together to celebrate.

Adults with visual impairments experience disproportionately high rates of depression, anxiety, and su***de-related outcomes. Research suggests that nearly one-third experience depressive symptoms, while people with visual impairments have approximately twice the risk of suicidal ideation and 2.5 times the odds of suicidal behavior compared with those without visual impairments (Demmin & Silverstein, 2020; Kim et al., 2024). Yet despite this increased risk, mental health needs frequently go unrecognized or untreated, and available services may not be accessible or responsive to the experiences of people with visual impairments.
In January 2026, Dr. Kristina Henderson and Dr. Carlie Rhoads launched an exploratory descriptive study examining the mental health and su***de-related experiences of adults with visual impairments. The study explored the availability and accessibility of mental health resources, barriers to care, social and emotional supports, and participants' recommendations for improving services.
In this webinar, Drs. Rhoads and Henderson will share findings from the study and consider what they reveal about where current systems fall short - and what is needed to build more accessible, responsive, and effective mental health supports for people with visual impairments.

CSB is excited to offer Cooking 101, a 3-day hands-on cooking series designed to help middle school students build confidence and independence in the kitchen!

Students will learn:
Kitchen safety skills
Adaptive food preparation techniques
Measuring, pouring & spreading
Safe cutting skills
Cleaning up their workspace
How to safely prepare a simple lunch independently!

We were thrilled to welcome back a familiar face to kick off Staff Development Week at CSB! 🐆

On the first day back for all staff and as we prepare to begin a new school year, we had the privilege of hearing from Jerry Kuns, a longtime educator, assistive technology pioneer, and disability advocate.

Jerry spent a decade at CSB as a technology specialist from 2004–2014, and it was especially meaningful to have him back on campus sharing his experiences. Rather than simply giving a presentation, Jerry shared personal stories from his life as a blind person—stories that gave our staff insight, perspective, and plenty to reflect on as we begin another year of serving our students.

Jerry has spent decades working to expand independence and accessibility for people who are blind and visually impaired, including co-founding organizations such as the Sensory Access Foundation. His work has connected technology, accessibility, public transit, tactile art, and community advocacy, all with the goal of creating a more accessible world.

Thank you, Jerry, for coming back to CSB and starting our Staff Development Week with stories, perspective, and inspiration. We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn from someone who has been such an important part of the CSB community! 👏

Keeping our campus blooming, even in the summer heat ☀️🌿💦

With temperatures rising, our ESY students have been hard at work making sure the CSB garden stays healthy and thriving. By watering plants, checking on our garden beds, and helping care for eh space they’re playing an important role in maintaining one of our campus’s beautiful outdoor learning environments.

Our high school cooking class had a busy ESY week of making meals! They were busy reading recipes, measuring ingredients, practicing kitchen safety, and working together to make some delicious meals.

Whether they’re trying a new recipe, mastering a cooking technique, or sharing a meal they’ve created together, our students are discovering that learning can be both practical and rewarding - one delicious dish at a time! 🍳

As part of our ESY program, CSB students participated in Bob’s Dog Wash, where they build valuable pre-employment and independent living skills through hands-on experience caring for our guide and ambassador dogs.

Students practice reading service requests, safely handling dogs, bathing, drying, cleaning ears, and even making homemade dog treats. Every task helps strengthen responsibility, communication, teamwork, and real-world jobs skills that support success beyond the classroom.

I’d say from the wags we got from this little guy, that our students had one happy customer! 🐾🐕

Through hands-on community experiences like this, students strengthen orientation and mobility skills, practice navigating public transportation, and build confidence traveling in new environments.

Curiosity led the way as our Summer Academies students spent the day exploring the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo! 🦩🐒

Our students got to meet some fascinating animals, play with some interactive science exhibits, and explore lots of hands-on learning experiences. These included feeding flamingos, holding flamingo eggs, digging for model dinosaurs in the Dinosaur Garden, explore the indoor science exhibits, and climb through different play structures.

It was a memorable day of exploration, curiosity, and summer fun 🔬☀️
