Created in 1973, the Sandusky County Park District provides natural areas for public appreciation and recreational use along with nature education for all ages, conducting over 300 programs and presentations per year. The Park District manages 12 facilities, 2314 acres serving an average of 150,000 park visitors a year including an average of 8,000 scuba divers from a multi-state area and Canada.

We weren’t able to go outside for our Sensory Play program, so instead we went on an indoor ‘hike’ to visit our animal ambassadors in the nature center.

The kids made their own hiking sticks, decorated treasure collecting bags, learned how to use magnifying lenses, and ate trail snack necklaces. Hopefully they are outside enjoying this (much nicer than this morning) weather and putting their new gear to good use!

🪺First Purple Martin eggs of the year! We counted 11 eggs in the gourds at Creek Bend yesterday. But there are many more to come! Our birds average 5 eggs per nest, but sometimes they lay 6 or even 7!

The female lays one egg per day and doesn’t start incubation until the second to last egg is laid. This allows the chicks to all hatch the same day, so they are all relatively the same size and have equal chance at getting the food brought to the nest by the parents. This also results in a shorter time spent raising chicks, which is termed ‘Streamlined Parenting’.
