On Monday, the SCEDC was privileged to attend a tour of Whirlpool in Clyde hosted for U.S. Acting Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling during NW Ohio’s workforce tour. Plant Manager and SCEDC Board Member Ryan DeLand welcomed us and led a behind-the-scenes look at the facility.

The Secretary met employees, saw the in-house training center, and even tried shooting screws. He also learned about the upskill pathways through Whirlpool's apprenticeship program. Whirlpool’s generational workforce and commitment to domestic manufacturing were on full display.

Our partnership with Whirlpool strengthens the K-12 talent pipeline across Sandusky County through student career camps, teacher bootcamps, Leadership Sandusky County, and the annual THINK Manufacturing Showcase. Thank you to Whirlpool Clyde, Ryan DeLand, and our education and workforce partners for expanding opportunity and showcasing the great careers available here at home.

Today we celebrated the ribbon cutting of the Lake Erie West Regional Council’s first satellite office right here in Fremont!

Formerly known as TMACOG, Lake Erie West is a nonpartisan regional planning partnership that helps coordinate transportation, water quality, and economic development efforts across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

Lake Erie West supports our communities in many different facets—bringing partners together, coordinating regional planning efforts, and helping position our projects for success. One recent example is their work facilitating our Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS), which strengthens our ability to pursue additional EDA funding.

Having Lake Erie West closer to home will only deepen our collaboration and benefit the communities we serve together.

Applications for the Leadership Sandusky County Class of 2027 are officially OPEN, but only until July 31!

If you’ve been thinking about developing your leadership skills, building connections across Sandusky County, or sending a rising leader from your organization, now is the time to apply. The 9‑month program includes monthly full‑day sessions, community tours, and practical leadership training you can apply right away.

Tuition is $850 per participant, with a discounted rate of $725 for SCEDC investors.

Spots are limited, and once the deadline passes, the next chance won’t be until next year. Don’t wait.
