🚍 School Bus Safety Tips from SRO Leaman 🚨

A quick reminder as the school year gets underway:
• Never drive around a school bus with the stop sign out or red lights flashing. Kids may be crossing, and passing a stopped bus puts them at serious risk.

• Driving around a stopped school bus with its stop arm out is a $500 fine in Nebraska.

• Slow down in school zones and near bus stops. Children can be unpredictable.

• Give school buses extra space. They make frequent stops and need room.

• Stay alert during morning and afternoon hours. Bus routes are busiest then.

The Fremont Police Department has been awarded a traffic enforcement grant in partnership with the Nebraska Department of Traffic Highway Safety Office. The “Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over” grant will last18 days, beginning August 21st and ending September 7th. The focus of the grant is to decrease the increasing trend for impaired driving related injuries and fatalities.
Nebraska has 1.42 million licensed drivers and 2.5 million registered vehicles. Traffic crashes are a daily occurrence resulting in nearly 18,000 injured people annually. In the calendar years of 2021 to 2026, over 9,000 reported crashes involved alcohol. Of those alcohol related crashes, nearly half resulted in some sort of injury or fatality.
