It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that the French Island Fire Department announces the passing of Steve Brown.

Steve was a 50-year member of the Fire Department, and served in many different roles, including as a Past Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, firefighter, member of the Board of Trustees, and in any other way that he could help our department. His skills are seen in all of our equipment, where his work as a machinist and fabricator supported our agency for decades. At one time, Steve and several other department members built a fire truck for our community by shortening a chassis, shortening and rebalancing the drive shaft, and mounting a tank on the chassis. He was a fixture, known for serving the eggs at the Pancake Breakfast, and for making sure we always had a supply of pens at the station from Iland Tool and Die, his family business where he was a pillar of our community as a business owner. Steve supported our department in so many ways, even making annual donations for giveaways for our firefighters at our Christmas Party.

Steve was a close friend, mentor, and brother, and we will profoundly miss his presence at the fire station, at Iland Tool and Die, and in our community.

Service details are pending and will be shared by the Brown family when determined.

Rest easy, brother. Your watch is over, we’ll take it from here.

A truly special man. In rare times on our lives, we cross paths with someone who invests in us and makes us better. Greatness can take many forms, but the real imprint we leave behind is sometimes only revealed when we are gone. Ted Harris was our teacher, mentor, friend and advisor, as he was to so many in our fire service. This incredible person achieved excellence in so many ways, as a high school teacher and principal, a Sheriff’s Deputy, a hall of fame wrestling referee, as a firefighter, Chief Officer and fire instructor, Fire Service State Rep, and he made us all better because he was in our lives. We are sad that he isn’t here among us anymore, but the legacy of a life lived to the fullest, and the lessons he taught us and others will be his incredible legacy.

Our hearts go out to his family at this difficult time. We are wishing and praying for peace for you and hope that Ted’s legacy and huge impact on all of us shows you how fortunate we all are to have had him with us.

The world lost one of the good ones.
His family their husband, father, grandfather and more.
The athletes lost their coach, referee and umpire.
The students lost the man who showed what respect meant.
The school staff lost their friend, colleague and leader.
Law enforcement is without his poise and demeanor.
EMS lost the quick and critical thinker.
The HAZMAT crews lost their guru.

The fire service lost a true brother.

Ted Harris was a legend, a man among men and a friend to all who knew him. He taught so many young firefighters what was needed to become an old firefighter.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Harris family.

The Campbell Police Department is hosting the La Crosse County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony on Friday, May 15th, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Celebrations on the River. Community members are invited to join as we honor fallen officers whose sacrifice will never be forgotten and the families who continue to keep their memories alive.
